US Open Tennis 2011: Rain Destroys Marvelous Momentum of 2011 US Open
The 2011 US Open began with a flurry. Once we got to the really good stuff, we were told to head home for an intermission. The waiting has led to frustration, which leads to memory loss. In fact, I can't remember what was so good about the 2011 US Open anymore.
I have a shaky recollection of Roger Federer losing about ten years on his legs and nearly destroying the ego of Juan Monaco. Yes, I am sure I saw that.
It is fresh in the mind because it happened so closely to the infusion of rain that has cancelled all but 20 minutes of tennis in two days.
The ground is wet at Flushing Meadows. The seats are empty, and I am drawing a blank. I could have sworn that Caroline Wozniacki came back in a stirring return to form in a marathon match.
Wait, perhaps I dreamed that, it was so long ago. Didn't Serena Williams take down Ana Ivanovic? Yes...yes, I know that happened because I exclaimed "now she is back" when it happened. Or am I thinking of Maria Sharapova?
The rain continues and the best parts of Week 1 continue to get drowned out by the incessant delays. Everyone with a racket is frustrated at the lack of a viable alternate plan, and everyone with a remote control is going mad from the ongoing reruns from past matches.
The US Open is being hit with the worst kind of delay, a never-ending rain delay. These are the times that baseball games switch to cartoons on the jumbotron as fans smile and stick it out.
Yet, this delay is holding up a Grand Slam tournament, just when it was about to get really good. The worst part is that rain is being forecast for Thursday and Friday.
Wait, no.
The worst part is that this was shaping up to be one of the most memorable Opens in recent memory. There were so many great matches and stirring sets.
Now that is all being washed away.
