Why the Philadelphia Eagles Won't Win Super Bowl

Ryan RudnanskySep 8, 2011

Given the talent on the Philadelphia Eagles this season, it's rather easy to proclaim them the next Super Bowl champions.

But they won't win the Super Bowl, at least this season.

You need to start a list preceded by a colon just to fit in all the offseason acquisitions for the Eagles this offseason: top cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, top cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, defensive ends Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin, quarterback Vince Young, running back Ronnie Brown and former New York Giants receiver Steve Smith.

Young went a bit over the top calling the Eagles "The Dream Team" and effectively spurring comparisons to the Miami Heat; he was right in calling them "The Dream Team," and the comparisons to the Heat were valid, if but for the wrong reasons.

The Heat found out firsthand last season that assembling an assortment of superstars doesn't automatically guarantee you a championship, and their chemistry issues are a warning sign to this Eagles team.

Now, I'm not saying the Eagles will call players-only meetings in the midst of a slump and start bickering behind each other's backs. What I am saying is that champions are not bought, they are constructed through time.

Any championship team will tell you that you need the right pieces working in unison to become the next great thing. The Packers didn't automatically become Super Bowl champions last season. That was built on draft picks throughout the years.

Since the Packers' Super Bowl in 1998, they drafted receiver Donald Driver ('99), linebacker Nick Barnett (2003), Rodgers (2005), linebacker A.J. Hawk and receiver Greg Jennings (2006), receiver James Jones and kicker Mason Crosby (2007), receiver Jordy Nelson and tight end Jermichael Finley and finally linebacker Clay Matthews (2009).

While adding pieces along the way, the Packers were able to grow as a unit, building up throughout the years before they became a superpower in 2010.

Now, I'm not saying it will take the Eagles 12 years to become a Super Bowl champion, but to think that just by throwing talent on the field you will instantly win a championship is to not understand the game of football. Championships are built on toil and sacrifice, years of dedication and companionship.

The Eagles may be the most talented team of 2011, but to be the best it requires far more than that.

The Eagles have a bright future, but they won't win Super Bowl XLVI.
