Will Oscar De La Hoya Be at Mayweather/Ortiz or Canelo/Gomez on September 17th?
Oscar De La Hoya is still the biggest name in boxing even though he has not fought since his one sided beat down from the hands of the current pound for pound champion Manny Pacquiao three years ago.
Oscar is the president of the fastest growing top promotions company in boxing, Golden Boy promotions named after his fight moniker. Of course recently he dominated much of the sports news waves by talking openly about his battle with his addictions of drugs and alcohol and for the most part coming clean on his past.
This sobering yet shocking news overshadowed any news about the other two current super star cash cows of boxing Mayweather and Pacquiao as many sports news outlets, fight forums and even Twitter had several fans and media weighing in on his news.
It is interesting to note that several years ago when photos of him surfaced wearing a stripper's uniform HBO's boxing's Jim Lampley was quick to dismiss the notorious photos making it clear that they were a hoax.
Recently Oscar admitted that the photos were indeed real for he truly seem that he wants to come clean on everything. The point I am trying to make is that this shows how powerful Oscar is that the number one cable network would go out of there way to defend him when facing a notorious scandal even though it was indeed true.
Whether you love or hate Oscar De La Hoya, the truth is he still is the man when it comes to boxing for the golden boy shines brighter than pretty much everyone even in his darkest hours, or at least admitting to them.
So the big question I have and many fight fans and media should be thinking is which fight will Oscar De La Hoya be at on September 17?
For those of you who do not know Golden Boy promotions is doing one hell of a card that night. They have the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Victor Ortiz fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as well as the Saul Alvarez vs Alfonso Gomez fight going on at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
As much as Oscar is the man he can not be at two places at the same time so obviously he must chose which fight he will be sitting ringside at giving his full undivided attention and support to.
Let's check out this video slide show and weigh in on his options shall we?
Will Oscar Be Ringside for Victor Ortiz?
1 of 4If you see this clip of Oscar De La Hoya talking about Victor Ortiz on the Piers Morgan Show on CNN you see that Oscar is either becoming a smooth talking promoter once and for all or he truly does admire the young Victor Ortiz.
Oscar talks how he hopes Victor looked up to him when he was fighting in his prime and ironically he finds himself now as a promoter looking up to Ortiz and wanting to be more like him.
For those of us who saw the HBO 24/7 Mayweather/Ortiz episode 2 we see Oscar having a pep talk with Ortiz saying that Mayweather is old now in his mid 30's and has been out of the ring for too long. Oscar even goes as far as saying that Mayweather should be the under dog in this fight since Ortiz is so young, fast, powerful and hungry. Victor just looks back at Oscar as he says these things and takes it all in.
I'm not sure what to make of this to be honest. Does Oscar's bold pep talks really make a difference in the Mayweather fight? Or will Oscar need to be sitting ringside for the full on support of Ortiz?
Oscar has been Mr. Las Vegas, Mr. MGM Grand, many of times so it would be easy to assume that he would be at the MGM Grand on September 17th right?.....................right?................
Will Oscar Be Ringside for Canelo?
2 of 4As much admiration that Oscar may have for Ortiz, we have to keep in mind that Oscar is a business man......in fact a great business man, meaning he knows what will make the most money and just as important what will make him the most money for the long run and that answer is one word: CANELO.
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is the Justin Bieber of boxing. Meaning his hype is so huge and mysterious you find yourself wondering why the hell is it that way?
Canelo is a good fighter, very technically sound. He is undefeated and even younger than Ortiz just turning 21 few months ago. But the buzz surrounding Canelo is a beast that keeps growing and growing at epidemic rates in Mexico onto the heavy populated Mexican communities within the United States.
I have said this many times before Canelo is Oscar De La Hoya's 401K and then some.
At the Mayweather/Mosley post fight conference Oscar De La Hoya came out and said before Floyd and Shane come out I want to introduce you all to the biggest name in Mexico right now and that was of course Canelo. Most of us who saw Alvarez for the first time were utterly confused for his red hair and freckles made us wonder if he was the correct fighter that Oscar was meaning to introduce to media that day.
Ever since then more and more people know who Canelo is and more and more are starting to believe in his hype.
Oscar was seen very happy and very friendly to the media after the Canelo/Hatton fight in which Saul won a world championship WBC belt.
So does this mean Oscar will be ringside at the Staples Center that night?
Will Oscar Be Ringside for Money May
3 of 4After the Mayweather defeated Mosley Oscar got up at the podium and praised Floyd as one of the greatest and quite possibly the greatest of all time because he is undefeated and he beat Oscar and just beat Shane.
I almost wanted to ask Oscar in front of all the media if he thinks Floyd would have beaten him had they fought more so in his prime, but decided not to.
I clearly saw what was going on Oscar was doing what his promoter hat entails and that is hyping up and promoting those he does business with such as Mayweather.
Oscar again is a smart business man he knows what or who will ultimately bring him the most money so despite the tension and animosity often expressed by Floyd, Oscar knows business is business.
As you can see in the post fight conference despite Floyd's large entourage which includes his advisers and several bodyguards Oscar is seen here standing right next to him while everyone else is several feet away.
Off camera one journalist even asked Floyd about a report that came out that Oscar personally paid off his IRS debts in return to do business and fight with Golden Boy promotions, Floyd quickly denied this report and wished that journalist well despite the room getting upset with the insulting accusation. Oscar himself made a face that looked extremely confused.
Oscar Can Be Ringside for Both Fights in Vegas and Los Angeles
4 of 4Oscar De La Hoya is a real president when it comes to his Golden Boy promotions company. He not only has the charm, and the looks but he also has the means of transportation that a true president has.
We seen evidence of this when Oscar would travel across the nation to promote for his own fights as well as his Golden Boy fighters' fights. We have seen from HBO's 24/7 Oscar has taken a private jet from location to location coming down from his private plane as if it was Air Force 1.
If you recall in the De La Hoya/Pacquiao 24/7 episode they showed how Manny always takes his rockstar tour bus drive up to Vegas from LA where Oscar takes his private jet. We see he changes from a corporate suit into his Golden Boy jump suit and takes a step onto his the steps down from his plane to suck in the dirty air of Vegas.
The point is Oscar has the means to pull it off if he really wanted to go from the Canelo fight at Staples Center which starts earlier than the main event of Mayweather/Ortiz in Vegas. He would probably have to transfer to a helicopter at some point and land on top of the MGM Grand for the roads around the MGM Grand that night should be bumper to bumper on the big fight night.
HBO would probably make a big deal out of Oscar being ringside first at the Canelo fight to traveling 300 miles to Vegas to be ringside for Mayweather/Ortiz.
HBO may even stall until the Golden Boy finally gets there causing many fight fans to wait.
If Oscar were to successfully pull this off then he will one up all the other promoters for he will make it known that he is still very much in his prime and the new pound for pound champion of the sport of promoting.
