Nick Diaz Cut from UFC 137: GSP Will Now Face Carlos Condit

Gregory ChaseJun 7, 2018

At the UFC 137 Press conference, Dana White made a shocking announcement about Georges St. Pierre’s upcoming fight:

The UFC Welterweight Champion, Georges St. Pierre, will now face Carlos Condit at UFC 137.

It seems that Nick Diaz has gone MIA and has been for the past few media promotions the UFC has required to be at. Dana White stated “he lied to my face” when agreeing to “play the game." What Dana meant was he wanted the dominant Strikeforce fighter to be professional in his endeavors, such as showing up at press conferences.

After not getting on three different flights, and not keeping in contact with the organization, the UFC has scrapped Diaz and taken away his shot at the UFC Welterweight title, and has seriously marred his chances of coming to the UFC.

Carlos Condit will step up and “deserves the shot” according to Dana White, who now is in a position to rearrange a fight for BJ Penn as well, who was supposed to face Condit next. BJ at the time of the press conference did not know of this change up.

While announcing the press conference, Cesar Gracie called Dana White in the middle of some Q&A, which White picked up and proceeded to speak with Diaz’s manager. Cesar apologized and said he was embarrassed and that Diaz was running around and hiding from everyone, and thinks it is as weird as everyone thinks. He “snuck out the back door of Cesar’s house” and he could not find him, according to Dana.

GSP finds Condit to be the more challenging opponent, believes he has a good ground game, and his stand up is more dangerous than Diaz. Condit “has a bigger variety of attack…and hits harder than Nick Diaz, and it’s a fight I think is more dangerous….and I think he’s a better fighter than Nick Diaz", according to GSP.

This is unprecedented in the history of the UFC, where there has been such a no-show. An act that Dana White has called “insane." Accurate, since tickets went on sale today for the advertised “champion vs. champion."

It is a “pretty big financial blow”, says White.

When asked for GSP to comment on Diaz actions, he responded “I don’t know what to say, it doesn’t make sense…it’s crazy, it's the opportunity to make it out of the shadow and make a living…his life would have changed completely.”

Dana it seems has fixed the situation, and all are in agreement that this was the right move. Speculation is that Diaz could have folded under the pressure of such a big fight, but regardless, Condit will be sure to show up for a fight. With the new fight on for UFC 137, we will see if Carlos Condit can capitalize on such an opportunity and dethrone the dominant welterweight, Georges St. Pierre.
