SEC Expansion: Why Baylor Has Every Right to Challenge Texas A&M Exit

Tim DanielsJun 1, 2018

After receiving confirmation from the Big 12 that no school would take legal action if Texas A&M left the conference, the SEC voted to accept the Aggies as a new member, according to the SEC Digital Network. Based on a report by ESPN's Joe Schad, Baylor has since withdrawn its consent.

With all the talk about super conferences becoming the new way of life in college football within the next few seasons, Baylor has every right to delay the move of Texas A&M and any other Big 12 school who attempts to bolt prematurely.

All of the movement that's forthcoming is going to leave a couple teams out in the cold because there are only so many spots available and a bunch of teams who will want to fill them. If Baylor thinks there is a chance they will get a raw deal, it needs to do everything it can to avoid it.

The teams in the Big 12 have seen what happens to teams like Boise State and TCU because of their inferior conferences. They get no respect from the BCS and struggle to schedule games against power conference teams, who are afraid to get beaten by a non-conference foe.

For Baylor, it's all about self-preservation.

The writing is on the wall and with news slowly continuing to trickle out about possible moves, whether it be Oklahoma to the Pac-12 or Texas A&M to the SEC, things are starting to move.

There will become a moment when conference realignment begins to happen at a rapid pace and perhaps Baylor's administration felt if the Texas A&M move was confirmed, chips would start falling so quickly they would miss out.

By threatening legal action, they get to slow the entire process down while they do their due diligence on the subject. Getting stuck in an extremely weakened Big 12 or another non-super conference is a doomsday scenario for one of the new additions to this week's AP Top 25.

People aren't going to appreciate the decision, especially those in College Station who were planning on a party to celebrate the SEC move. But for their own sake, Baylor made the right call.

And in the dog-eat-dog world of college football, you have to worry about yourself first and everybody else later.
