Caroline Wozniacki: World No. 1 Has No Chance to Win US Open

Tim DanielsSep 6, 2011

Give Caroline Wozniacki some credit. She's willing to travel across the world and play in minor tournaments to keep her ranking high. That said, she doesn't deserve to be the top-ranked player in the world and she isn't prepared to win her first major at the US Open.

Wozniacki demonstrated tremendous heart to fight back against Svetlana Kuznetsova, who clearly ran out of steam in the middle of the second set. She used her defensive skills to force the veteran into 78 unforced errors.

Before the Kuznetsova match, Wozniacki wasn't tested due to her high ranking and the lack of depth in Women's Tennis. Nuria Llagostera Vives, Arantxa Rus nor Vania King had enough weapons to beat Wozniacki and it's players like those that Wozniacki beats consistently at small tournaments to maintain the No. 1 ranking.

When she gets down to the business end of majors and faces players with attacking styles, however, she struggles to stay in the match. If her opponent doesn't take the lead role in beating themselves, Wozniacki struggles to generate enough offense to win on her own.

Do you honestly believe Serena Williams is worried about Wozniacki?

No chance. Williams knows she can beat Wozniacki. The Dane doesn't have enough weapons in her arsenal to threaten the 13-time Grand Slam champion. Until she adds that extra dimension to her game, so she can beat her opponent without needing bad play from across the net, she's not a legitimate threat.

It's the same problem that plagued Jelena Jankovic when she reached to top of the sport. She continued to play the same style no matter the circumstances and couldn't get over the hump in majors—and now she's stuck around No. 10 in the world and going nowhere fast.

Wozniacki will suffer the same fate if she doesn't start addressing the deficiencies in her game.

Could she beat Andrea Petkovic? Maybe. There's no chance she would beat Williams, though. Not now. Not with the game she's playing.

There are four months until the Australian Open—the first major of 2012—and it's time for Wozniacki to go on the offensive. Otherwise, she'll remain a non-factor in the championship picture.
