Winnipeg Jets Uniforms: Where They Rank Among the Canadian Hockey Clubs

Nicholas GossSep 6, 2011

The NHL's newest franchise the Winnipeg Jets, formerly the Atlanta Thrashers, have finally unveiled their new jerseys for the 2011-12 season.

The team showed off the new jerseys at a press conference today at the Royal Canadian Air Force base 17 wing, according to CBC.

The jerseys are primarily two colors, white and two shades of blue (polar night blue and aviator blue).

During the press conference, one of the Jets owners commented on the style of the jerseys.

"Our desire was to authenticate the name and make it as meaningful as we possibly could," said Jets co-owner Mark Chipman.

"In my view, the best way to do that was to draw a connection to the rich history that our city has enjoyed with the air force, particularly with 17 Wing," he added, referring to the military base near Winnipeg's airport.

Now that we finally know what the new Jets logo look like, let's see how they stack up to the rest of the jerseys from Canada's NHL franchises.

7. Toronto Maple Leafs

I understand the Toronto Maple Leafs logo is classic, but it's also a bit boring.

However, it's likely never going to change all that much, and it shouldn't due to the great history and pride of the franchise.

One thing about the Maple Leafs jerseys is they rarely change much year to year, with only a few minor changes if any.

6. Montreal Canadiens

2 of 7

Like the Toronto Maples Leafs, the Montreal Canadiens logo and uniforms haven't undergone drastic changes throughout the past 50 years, and have remained pretty much the same.

The Canadiens also don't have any good alternate uniforms.

Although, when you are the NHL leader with 24 Stanley Cup championships, you don't have to change your jersey too much, people will know who you are.

5. Edmonton Oilers

One of the better decisions the Edmonton Oilers have made in recent years was to go back to the orange and blue style uniforms they wore during the 1980s, when hockey legend Wayne Gretzky helped create one of the league's best dynasties with the Oilers.

The Oilers also have well designed alternate uniforms too.

4. Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets unveiled their new jerseys for the 2011-12 season Tuesday, and in addition to white, they will use two shades of blue, polar night blue (which is found on many Canadian military planes) and aviator blue (a shade of blue many of the RCAF planes used in the past).

Jets Executive Vice-President & General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said the following about the new jerseys, via the National Post

“We wanted to create a look that worked well with Reebok’s modern and innovative “Edge System” uniforms,” said Kevin Cheveldayoff, Executive Vice-President & General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets in a release. “However, it was also vitally important to us to honour the rich history of hockey in our city, and fit the era of the Royal Canadian Air Force which inspired the primary crest design. The result is clean, simple and traditional.”

Fans can pre-order the jerseys at 5 p.m. ET at the team's website.

3. Vancouver Canucks

5 of 7

The Vancouver Canucks have one of the coolest logos in the NHL, and in the 2007-08 season they switched back to the blue and green style of jerseys they wore during the 1970s.

However, several of their older, vintage jerseys are more popular and better designed than the current ones.

With that said, these jerseys are still really cool, and some of the best in the league.

2. Ottawa Senators

6 of 7

The Ottawa Senators have had some very nice jerseys the last 25 years, and always get creative with their alternate ones.

While the logo hasn't changed much since 1990, the Senators have had seven different variations of their away jersey, and four different sets of home jerseys since the 1992-93 season.

They've had three different alternate jerseys during that span as well.

Give the Senators credit, they always give the fans a fresh look every couple of seasons.

1. Calgary Flames

7 of 7

The Calgary Flames always have some of the best jerseys in the NHL.

The flaming "C" is one of the better logos in hockey too, and the color scheme is always beautifully done. Whether they are primarily white, red or black, the Flames jerseys are the best among Canada's NHL teams.
