2011 NFL Fantasy Football Strategy Tips: Matt Cassel Expected to Start Week 1

Sean E. DouglasSep 6, 2011

Matt Cassel a Go for Week 1

After reports that Matt Cassel might miss the team's opener, the Chiefs starting quarterback resumed practice on Monday and is now expected to go against the Bills.

Fantasy Impact: While it seems many fantasy owners are laughing at the thought of making Dwayne Bowe a WR-1 on draft day, those who drafted him as their second options should smile this year if Cassel is on the field. While Cassel has struggled to find rhythm with his new targets, like Steve Breaston and Jonathan Baldwin, he's still in harmony with Bowe.

The only downside for Bowe is if Cassel can't find the field, as he has a horrible situation on the depth chart at quarterback. Let's hope Cassel can stay upright this season.

Evan Royster Added to Redskins Practice Squad

The Redskins proceeded to place Evan Royster on the practice squad after he cleared waivers.

Fantasy Impact: The Redskins drafted two running backs this spring and Evan Royster from Penn State was the second option. Not an explosive runner, Royster figures to be called up from the practice squad if and when the Redskins have an injury to one of their tail backs. Look for Tim Hightower to be the main option this season.

Donnie Avery Released

The Rams decided to part ways with deep threat Donnie Avery, who is recovering from a torn ACL, sustained last summer.

Fantasy Impact: With so many receivers brought into camp, it was going to be hard for Avery to keep a job while recovering from his injury. Expect Avery to sign with another team in the near future, at that time we can asses his fantasy value, but likely he needs to land a starting job before he has relevance.

Jones and Bryant Need to Play Great for Cowboys to Be Good

In a recent article by Jim MacMahon, the writer suggested that in order for the Cowboys to be a good team, they would need Felix Jones and Dez Bryant to play at a Pro Bowl level.

Fantasy Impact: Usually, I just report news and not just opinions from an article, but MacMahon caught my eye with this prediction. While I believe both players are up for producing this year, it will be essential for the Cowboys to score over 30 points a game if they have hopes of making the playoffs. If these two are up for the challenge, then they will deliver upside on the fourth- to fifth-round selection both are going at in drafts this summer.
