US Open Tennis 2011: Roger Federer Laughs His Way to Victory, Eyes Tsonga Next

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

If Monday/Tuesday's match didn't say anything about Federer, then I don't know what could.

The 30-year old former No. 1 put a whopping on Juan Monaco, in a 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 victory that lasted only an hour and twenty-two minutes in a match that started at around midnight.

Some thought that Monaco would give Federer a run for his money, but this beat down certainly showed promise for Federer in continuing his journey to capture his 17th Grand Slam.

The true test for Federer lies in the 11th ranked Jo Wilfried Tsonga, which currently stands at 4-3 Federer. Tsonga is coming off a big victory over the American Mardy Fish, but Fish and Federer are two totally different animals.

Tsonga and Federer have had some great matches in the past, and fans should expect another, since both are currently playing at a high level.

Most recently, the two met at Wimbledon. That match was an epic five setter, with Tsonga coming back from two sets down. That was the first ever match Federer has lost after winning the first two, so expect Federer to be looking for redemption.

Tsonga has won the last two matches against Federer, including Wimbledon, both being early exits for Federer's standards.

Still, this is the US Open and Federer has won here five times.

The Swiss and the Frenchman will be battling it out in the quarters on Wednesday, and expect another great chapter in this great match up.

With the way Federer has been playing at the Open, expect to see Federer take down Tsonga in a grueling five setter. Tsonga will put up a great fight, but right now Federer's game is running as smooth as it has during his dominating days.
