Andy Roddick Video: Watch Roddick's Baffling Brain Cramp at the US Open
Andy Roddick may be the most popular player at the 2011 US Open in front of the American fans…but that doesn’t mean you can steal your opponents chair.
In the third set of his straight-set victory over Julien Benneteau 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(5) on Sunday, Roddick decided he wanted a new chair.
Roddick plopped down in Benneteau’s chair and began to wipe all the sweat off his face with a towel.
Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Well, that’s what Roddick thought.
Benneteau came over and gave him the “what the heck, man?” look, and Roddick instantly realized his gaffe. He looked around like a lost kid in an amusement park before it sunk in that he was on the wrong side of the net. You hear him drop a quick curse word and quickly get back to his own seat.
Roddick can make the claim that he was just so supremely focused on the next point that he didn’t notice the error.
That’s the best way to play it off.
The timing of this is what makes it really funny. Roddick just turned 29 last week, and maybe he was just showing his age. The age of 29 is old in tennis, and critics are beginning to wonder if he will ever win another major tournament.
Now he can’t even remember which chair he sits in.
Roddick enters the final 16 playing extremely well, and the idea of wining this Grand Slam event sounds more likely by the day.
In front of the New York City crowd, everybody is cheering for the face of American tennis—just remember to keep your own chair.
