Terrell Owens: Star WR Wise to Milk Free Agency for All It's Worth

Alex KaySep 5, 2011

Terrell Owens is making the right call by just hanging back, rehabbing at his own pace and waiting for teams to start seeking his services.

If T.O. weren’t a veteran with 15 solid years of NFL experience behind him, he’d have been working like crazy to get back in time for a training camp. But when you are one of the biggest and brightest star WRs to have ever played the game, well, you can be a little patient.

Owens will be needed this season and he knows it. He even told ESPN as much.

"I'm not going to rush into it. But injuries are going to occur during the course of the season. Some receivers are going to go down. I'm going to prepare myself. I'll be ready when the time comes.”

By waiting until some injuries happen to NFL teams’ top receivers, Owens is going to be able to pick and choose his comeback spots. At the advanced age of 37, T.O. probably wants to make it back to the Super Bowl one more time before he retires.

He made it to the big game just once in his illustrious career, back in 2005 with the Philadelphia Eagles. Owens recorded nine receptions for 122 yards and shined on the biggest stage, but his team eventually fell to the New England Patriots, 24-21.

Owens should not bother spending another season on a terrible team as he has done over the past few years. He spent last year wasting away on a terrible Bengals team and the year before languishing in Buffalo.

While Owens has not made a ton of friends over his NFL career and has burned many a bridge, he is still a productive receiver and a playoff-bound team could certainly use his services if they lose a receiver to injury.

Owens is quick to point out that he has been able to slide in seamlessly to offenses over the past few years and contribute. He told ESPN,

"

“I go to Cincinnati last year. Obviously, they had a great receiver there, Chad [Ochocinco]. I went into training camp a day after it started. I had only a month to grasp the offense. Again, look at the statistics—and I missed two or three games [14 games, 72 receptions, 983 yards, nine TDs]. This is another challenge for me. Another opportunity to show people that age is nothing but a number. You can do anything you put your mind and body to. I don't allow naysayers to deter me from my goal."

"

You can’t really argue with T.O.’s logic here, and it seems that he has his head squarely on his shoulders this offseason. Look for him to be patient in free agency and join a team when he is healthy and ready.
