US Open Tennis 2011: Donald Young's Magical Ride Will Get Derailed vs. Murray

Eric BallMay 31, 2018

Donald Young has come a long way since April.

The 22-year-old easily dispatched of No. 24 Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3, on Sunday, two days after eliminating No. 14 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

He is playing incredible tennis and is now in the conversation for the player to be the next face of American tennis.

A far cry from April, where he showed some extreme immaturity by posting an expletive-laden rant on Twitter after he felt he was wrongfully left out as a wild card in the French Open.

Now, all is forgotten and the potential is exciting to think about.

Young brings some serious style to his game. He prefers to wear bright colors, diamond earnings and a fat silver chain and cocks his hat to the side when he's in the mood, according to Young himself:

"

I like to play with style. I don't like to be boring. I like colors. I like to wear flashy things if I'm feeling good. If I'm not feeling good, I want to wear something neutral to not be seen.

"

Next up is a date with one of the best players in the world in Andy Murray. He is fresh off a win at the Western & Southern in Cincinnati and entered Flushing Meadows as one of the best answers to the question of who will win the US Open?

Young has run into a fore-handed buzz saw with Murray, and his power will overwhelm the youngster. The strong return game of Murray is something Young has yet to see at the US Open. This is the furthest Young has ever been in a major, and the inexperience will be on display in front of a raucous crowd at Arthur Ash Stadium.

Murray has been here before and is extremely focused on taking home his first title at Flushing Meadows.

Young will be a contender to win major after major for years to come, but in tennis it takes baby steps. This past week has already been a huge step in the right direction, and everything moving forward is icing on the cake.

With Young just happy to be here and Murray looking to get the monkey off his back, expect his magical ride to be shattered.
