US Open Tennis 2011: American Men Continue to Impress at Flushing Meadows
Everybody loves home cookin'.
Two months ago, America was up in arms over the fact that zero players from their home country were able to advance into the second week of Wimbledon.
Now, the US Open in New York City has four of them.
Andy Roddick advanced in straight sets (6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (5)) over Julien Benneteau on Sunday and is looking better and better by the match. He's a strong contender heading into the new week.
The story of the day was the spectacular performance by 22-year-old Donal Young. He defeated No. 24 Juan Ignacio Chela, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3, two days after eliminating No. 14 Stanislas Wawrinka to reach the final 16.
John Isner was also able to gut out a 7-6 (9), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Alex Bogomolov in an all-American battle.
The trio joins Mardy Fish as Americans that are only four wins away from hoisting the championship trophy in front of the Flushing Meadows crowd.
It's incredible what a difference two months can make, and now it looks like American tennis is in good hands with Young. He is growing up before our eyes and looks to be the future of the sport. Any further advancement from here would be icing on the cake.
Roddick is looking to win his first Grand Slam since taking home the US Open title all the way back in 2003. With the way his serve is working for him right now (21 aces and no double faults on Sunday), this is the time for Roddick to seize the moment and take advantage of a field that features banged-up stars like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Fish is looking to win his first-career major as he enjoys his best season as a pro. He may be 29, but Fish enters the second week as a serious contender.
Isner continues to squeak by, and the fatigue will likely set in at some point this week. Yet with the mental toughness Isner has displayed recently, it's hard to consider him an afterthought.
The downfall of American tennis has been severely over-exaggerated, and the blend of talent is very exciting for the future of the sport in America.
The possibility of an all-American final is alive and well, so stay tuned to see which one of the fearsome-foursome will advance the furthest.
I think Fish rides his incredibly hot 2011 all the way into the finals at Flushing Meadows. After the debacle at Wimbledon in July, that's all American tennis fans can ask for.
