NFL Roster Cuts: 5 Veterans We'll Never See Again After Being Released

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

NFL roster trim-down time is a nervous time for young players looking to make a splash and veterans who are nearing the end of the road.

Here are five veterans that won't find a new team after being cut following the final preseason game.

Tommie Harris

If the Indianapolis Colts, who have had one of the NFL's worst run defenses over the past decade, aren't willing to keep a defensive tackle on the roster, it's bad news.

That's the case for Harris, as he's lost too much explosiveness to be an effective player.

Should he fail to find a new team, Harris will finish his career with 215 tackles and 29 sacks. He was a disruptive force in the middle of the Chicago Bears defensive line for several seasons before knee injuries sapped his agility and speed.

Larry Johnson

The Miami Dolphins brought Johnson in near the end of camp as a wake-up call for rookie Daniel Thomas, who had been struggling.

Johnson did not impress during his time with the team and was promptly released.

Johnson was one of the league's best running backs in 2005 and '06, but the 752 carries during that span did enough damage to his body to end his productivity. He hasn't played more than seven games over the past three seasons and his career is likely over.

Edwards came out of Stanford with a lot of promise in 2007 and was considered a steal when the Bills drafted him late in the third round.

However, he never panned out and was instead just the latest in a long line of terrible Buffalo draft picks.

He did have one strong stretch at the beginning of the 2008 season. Edwards led the Bills to a 5-1 start before it all fell apart. He'll always be remembered as “Captain Checkdown” in Buffalo for his tendency to play it safe.

Sammy Morris

While Morris has never been a marquee running back, he's been a reliable backup for more than a decade.

His career is likely over after being released by the New England Patriots, though, who were the best fit for his skills.

Barring a desperate team giving Morris a call following an injury, he finishes his career 45 yards short of 3,000 with 27 touchdowns. He spent his entire career in the AFC East, playing for the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and the Patriots.

Will Allen

Even though he had a pretty productive career split between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins, Allen never really lived up to the hype of a first-round pick.

He was released by the Dolphins over the weekend, which could mark the end of his nine-year career.

Allen has just 15 interceptions and never had more than four in any single season. When a team spends such a high pick on a corner, they are expecting a game-changer, and Allen simply wasn't that.

If he does manage to catch on somewhere, it will be on an extremely limited basis.
