West Virginia's Bruce Irvin Begins His Run at the 1st Round

One of the trending strategies in the NFL is making a defensive switch to the aggressive 3-4 scheme.  This scheme requires a player that has the ability to bring pressure from the outside linebacker position.  Even traditional defenses are searching for someone to threaten the edge and create pressure.  This leads to specific players charging up draft boards. 

Last year’s draft saw Texas A&M’s pass rush specialist Von Miller’s fly up draft boards, with the Broncos selecting him No. 2 overall.  This trend is unlikely to end anytime soon, meaning a new crop of pass rushers will find themselves in the early first-round discussion.  It is always a hot-button topic because these players usually need to convert from defensive end to linebacker.  This transition doesn’t always go smoothly.

West Virginia’s Bruce Irvin has a legitimate shot of being selected in the early parts of Round 1.  He is an explosive player with a wide array of pass rushing moves.   His quickness allows him to threaten the edge and create pressure.  Irvin shows good balance and fluid hips, which are some of the tools necessary to transition to linebacker. 

While Irvin has a ton of skills, he does have a few question marks surrounding his game.  Irvin is undersized and may struggle to hold up against the run.  He also needs to continue to develop his instincts and football IQ.  The biggest focus for Irvin will be learning the ins and outs of pass coverage. 

Overall, Irvin’s ability to create pressure and make plays will make him a hot target come April.  Teams searching for an explosive pass rusher will surely keep an eye on Irvin.
