2011 US Open: Predictions for Monday, Sep. 6 on the Men's Side

Rohan SubraJun 7, 2018

After a few days gone at the 2011 US Open, we can already begin to see who is in form and who is not.

As today is Sunday, we already know who's going to play their fourth round matches on Monday, so here are my predictions.

Novak Djokovic vs Alexandr Dolgopolov

Over the course of this year, Djokovic has been almost unstoppable, winning two out of three majors—the Australian Open and Wimbledon—with only two losses.

In the past few days, Djokovic has looked quite good, though not at his best. His odds right now seem a bit lower than before the start of the tournament. He was overhitting some shots against Nikolay Davydenko and he definitely has room for improvement.

The Serb, though, is one of those players who just gets better as the competition gets tougher.

Alexandr Dolgopolov has one of the most unorthodox games in the world right now. When he broke onto the scene, many opponents were thrown off by his style.

He made a surprise run in this year's Australian Open, getting to the quarterfinals. A good thing about Dolgopolov is that he is great both on offense and defense; he isn't a one-dimensional player.

So far, Dolgopolov hasn't looked amazing; he was taken to a fifth set by Flavio Cipolla and to a fourth by Ivo Karlovic.

Prediction: Djokovic will be too much to handle.

Djokovic in three

Janko Tipsarevic vs Juan Carlos Ferrero

Janko Tipsarevic's road to the round of sixteen was not easy in the least. First he had to face German giant Philipp Petzschner—who did take a set off of Tipsarevic—and then he played world No. 9, Tomas Berdych.

In that match, Tipsarevic was outstanding. He was up a set and five games until Berdych was forced to retire.

He looks ready to take on any players that get in his way.

Juan Carlos Ferrero is up there, when we talk about great Spanish players. Since he is 31, everyone thought he had nothing left in him.

However, he beat fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar in a tough five-setter, and then he beat No. 7-seed Gael Monfils in an even tougher five-setter.

After he beat Marcel Granollers, he gained a spot in the fourth round.

Prediction: Tipsarevic's game will be enormous, and though Ferrero will put up a good fight, Janko will prevail.

Tipsarevic in four

Roger Federer vs Juan Monaco

Roger Federer's last few months have been affected by Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, as the Spaniard and the Serb have split the last six grand slams.

Federer also hasn't been playing at his best, leaving onlookers to wonder whether it's temporary or if age is really taking its toll on the Swiss Maestro.

After beating Marin Cilic in a great match, fans found that he looked a bit shaky. He might have enough steam to win a few more rounds, though.

Juan Monaco has been around for a while, but he seems to be playing some of the best tennis of his life. The fourth round of a grand slam is his best result, and he is already there right now in the 2011 US Open.

As the Argentine beat Radek Stepanek (the twenty-third seed) and Tommy Haas, he must be on a high in terms of confidence and I'm sure he is raring to go against third seed Federer.

Clay and hard courts are his two best surfaces, so hopefully for Argentines he can beat Federer and make a run.

Prediction: This will be a very good match, and Juan Monaco will fight well. However, Federer might prove to have the edge.

Federer in four

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs Mardy Fish

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one of the hardest hitters in the world. Though he is able to pound the ball off of both flanks, he has shown that he can do much more, including hit volleys with a feathery touch.

Tsonga beat Roger Federer en route to the semifinals of Wimbledon, and lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. This was, however, a great success, as he showed everybody what he is capable of.

Now, Tsonga beat Fernando Verdasco in a much anticipated match, and he looks prepared for Fish.

Mardy Fish has broken out in the last few months, as he finally cracked the top 10, and is the No. 8 seed.

The American was fantastic during the US Open Series, beating Rafael Nadal and able to give Novak Djokovic a very tough time. Fish's huge game really came in handy.

To get to the round of sixteen, Fish had to topple South African Kevin Anderson, as well as Malek Jaziri and Tobias Kamke.

Playing the tennis of his life, Mardy Fish is a huge dark horse for this tournament.

Prediction: In one of the best matches of the tournament so far, it will be extremely close, but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will prevail.

Conclusion

Do you agree with me? Do you disagree? Who will win these matches? Who will win the open?

Please leave your comments and feedback.
