A New Points System in the Premier League: More Weight for Away Results

Jamie WardNov 18, 2008

Lawrie Sanchez has been asking the Football Association for a few years now that they revise the points system in English football. He is suggesting that a team playing away from home should be rewarded with four points for their efforts instead of the usual three that is currently given.

This could see away teams playing more attacking football and looking for the win instead of sitting back and parking the proverbial "bus" in front of the goal, which has led to some negative games of football in the past.

There is the possibility of other options for the new system, like two points for an away draw instead of one or even both teams getting no points at all for a goalless draw.

Maybe just an extra point for scoring more than three goals or perhaps the league should be based on a system of a point for every goal scored and the loss of a point for every one conceded.

Will the suggestions of Lawrie Sanchez make the league closer and more entertaining with a fairer system for the harder job of playing away from home? Or will it lead to a greater gap between the top four and the rest of the league?
