Dallas Cowboys: Is This a New Era for America's Team?

Manik AggarwalSep 3, 2011

Parcells created it. Cowher exuded it. Belichick thrives on it. Garrett...Garrett who? Jason Garrett. What is it? It's the undeniable passion to win.

As the Cowboys prepare for another season, the players, the coaches and even the owner have been saying the right things—having an aggressive defense, staying true to the game plan and ensuring a strong running game.

In years past, the team strolled into minicamp liked they already locked up a first-round bye in the playoffs, and by the time the preseason started, they were already counting the number of Pro Bowlers on their roster. By Week 1, they were already planning the ring-fitting ceremony for the franchise’s sixth Super Bowl win.

That has been the story during the Wade Phillips era, over the last handful of years.

Things are changing these days around Valley Ranch. For the first time, the team has a young head coach who holds them accountable for their actions and mishaps, and a defensive mastermind who demands the best out of each of his players.

Even more eye-opening has been the trusting and quiet approach that Jerry has taken this offseason.  It makes you wonder if Jerry is finally foregoing the Al Davis route and letting Stephen Jones, Jason Garrett and the rest of the staff take full charge of his Dallas Cowboys.

When the Cowboys kickoff against Rex Ryan and the Jets, it will be a watershed moment, and the decision they make can change their future, for better or worse.

They can take the Wade approach and stroll into New York with a sense of entitlement, thinking they have already achieved the star on the helmet.

Or, they can inherit the Jason Garrett philosophy—be confident, focus on each play, rely and support your teammates, do your best and be accountable for your actions.

Similar to the Parcells, Cowher and Belichick teams, the Cowboys do have a talented group, but unlike the past greats, they have not had the "it" factor. Is this the year? Jason Garrett certainly thinks so.
