Unranked Baylor Stuns the No. 14 Ranked Horned Frogs

Erik UnderwoodJun 3, 2018

47-23.  Baylor was absolutely laying the wood to the 14th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs at the start of the fourth quarter.

Then came one of the most entertaining fifteen minutes of football I've ever watched. TCU stormed back from the 24-point deficit and took the lead on a 27-yard field goal from Ross Evans, who had missed two earlier in the night.

Baylor simply could not move the ball, and kept shooting themselves in the foot for the first eleven minutes of the fourth quarter. Gone was the unstoppable offense riding on the arm of Robert Griffin, and instead there was a weak run game and no hope of closing out the upset.

Hope was finally restored for the Bears when Griffin led an 11-play, 60 yard drive to set up a game-winning 27-yard field goal with only 1:04 to play.

The Horned Frogs tried to drive down the field for one more shot at avoiding what would most certainly be a critical loss, but new starting quarterback Casey Pachall was intercepted on a third down pass at the Baylor 30.

Robert Griffin has been tremendously hyped, mostly because of his athleticism and world-class speed.  Tonight, however, it was not his speed that was on display, but his arm.  Griffin was an unreal 21-27 for 359 yards and five touchdowns against what was supposed to be one of the best defenses in the country, led by linebacker Tank Carder.

TCU's Pachall was also impressive in his debut, going 25-39 for 251 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Unfortunately for him, his defense could not back him up, as they yielded an astounding 50 points to Baylor.

If TCU doesn't fix their defense, and fix it fast, this season is going to be very long. They still have games against Boise State and San Diego State, who are both totally capable of putting up 50 points in a game.

For the Baylor Bears, this was an absolutely huge win for a team that is rebuilding and trying to work their way back to the top of the Big 12 conference.
