Boxing Exclusive: An Interview with Andre Berto's Cutman Danny Milano
Biloxi, Mississippi--The official Friday weigh-in went down between Andre Berto (27-1, 21 Knockouts) and IBF welterweight world champion Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18 Knockouts).
Both fighters weighed in under the welterweight limit of 147 lbs. Afterwards I spoke to Berto's cutman, Danny "The Cutman" Milano. He's a nice guy and gave me some nice history during our conversation.
I asked him, "Who was your first fighter?"
Danny: Scott depombe. IBC welterweight champ (of the world).
Author: In your line of work. I'm sure you've seen some nasty cuts. What was your nastiest?
Danny: Vinnie [Vincent] Maddalone. Bridge of his nose. It was squirting out. It was against Evander Holyfield.
Author: Headbutt or legitimate punch?
Danny: Legitimate punch.
Author: Out of all the cuts you've dealt with, was there a cut that you felt like, "how the hell do I fix this?"
Danny: That was the one.
Author: How did you come into this line of work?
Danny: I was the cornerman for Buddy McGirt. I was his cornerman since 1988. Howie Albert was Buddy's trainer, but he had a bad hip so I stepped in. You know Howie? He's a legend. He worked with Buddy McGirt and Gatti. He worked with Foreman, George Foreman. Hmmmm, Pernell. Lot's of big names. After that, I wanted to stay in this business....so I became a cutman.
Author: Final question: How do you see Berto vs Zaveck?
Danny: You see the Berto-Ortiz fight? Berto went down, I revived him and thought he'd go out and be the hero. It almost turned out like that, but they're [Berto and Zaveck] both punchers, they're both aggressive. So....we'll see.
Author: Well thank you sir.
Danny: You're welcome.
