US Open Tennis: Andy Murray Will Ride Momentum to Another Grand Slam Semifinal

Joseph HealySep 3, 2011

The story never seems to change with Andy Murray. He is a very good player, but the jury is still out on whether or not he is a great player. He has been ranked fourth in the world for what seems like an eternity and the chances that he moves up or down in the rankings seem slim.

Most of all, he is the forgotten man in tennis. All he does is make semifinals, and yet, he is overlooked. With that level of success, it's our fault as fans that we don't appreciate him enough.

We should take it upon ourselves to take the time to truly reflect on how good he is while watching this US Open. Coming off a thrilling five-set win over Robin Haase, Murray is well on his way to yet another semifinal appearance.

The match with Haase was classic Murray. He lost a close tiebreaker in the first set and seemed to use the entire second set as a time to mope about it, as Haase took it easily. Once down two sets, he responded.

Murray took the third set 6-2 and then buried Haase in the fourth set by the score of 6-0. It would have been unlike Murray to continue to dominate, though. Up 4-0 in the fifth set, Haase came storming back to tie the set at four and get things back on serve. Murray took the deciding set 6-4, but not before a few more incredible rallies and screams in the direction of his coaching box.

His ability to fight through a tough, up and down match like that is a big reason that I believe so strongly in his chances to get back to the semifinals here.

Murray, at his core, is a battler. He doesn't have any huge weapons, but he plays great defense and refuses to give up on any points. He's also one for comebacks. This was the sixth time he has come back from two sets down to win a match.

It seems that Murray can't really get into a tournament without one match where he has to battle back from adversity.

Murray has that match under his belt now and the rest of the field should take notice. He is about to go on his usual run to the final weekend of a tournament.
