Amster-Damned? Boise State Has to Leave Three Great Former Dutch Players Home.

Stephen GrettenbergJun 1, 2018

Idaho seems to be a destination for Dutch High Schoolers interested in American Football. Three players that were from Holland attended High Schools in Idaho, and joined the Boise State Football team.

1)  S Cedric Febis, Sr. is a starter and has been for several years.

2)  WR Geraldo Boldewijn, So. (formerly Hiwat) was slated as a co-starter.

3)  DT Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe, So was slated as the primary backup.

The news just broke, but already there is a huge amount of speculation. Over at www.obnug.com, a popular Boise State Blog, the comment string includes a lot of stressful accusations and commentary.

Was the eligibility of these players questioned by Georgia as a ploy to reduce the roster? Frankly that seems farfetched.

What role did Boise State's new compliance team play in it?  Cedric Febis was cleared to play last year, why would this year be different?

If there is a legitimate cause for eligibility concerns, how does that affect past wins?

Why is the question of eligibility for Dutch players when the SEC is littered with African players, many of which did not play high school football in the United States?

Should this sort of question affect Canadian players?

What is unquestioned is the awkwardness of the timing. Three key players suddenly have eligibility questions pop up just before a major game, after they have been playing for years, in high school, and at Boise State?

One assumes the common thread is that they are from Holland.

Chris Petersen, the Boise State coach, is supposed to have a press conference soon, perhaps more details will come out.  In the meantime, the three players are not traveling to Georgia.
