John Brantley Looks to Rebuild Draft Stock
This weekend marks the start of a new era for Florida Gators football but also a new era for quarterback John Brantley. Last season, Brantley was asked to replace the beloved Tim Tebow and continue to uphold the years of success. However, he failed to impress as the Gators had a sub-par season, by their standards.
The expectations were high for Brantley as many were blinded by their confidence in Florida and the coaching staff. He was a square peg in a round hole, as he was asked to lead an offensive attack crafted for a mobile quarterback. Brantley is athletic, but his strength is his ability to throw the football, not pick up yardage with his feet.
The Florida offense relies on the quarterback not only making plays with his feet but threatening to make plays with his feet. Opposing teams did not fear Brantley's running ability, thus limiting his effectiveness in the offense.
This season, Brantley will have the opportunity to run a pro-style offense developed by offensive guru Charlie Weis. Weis has a long history of developing quarterbacks and offenses that are very productive. Brantley spent the offseason learning the playbook and appears ready to cash in on his talents.
Expectations in Gainesville are on the rise as are the expectations for John Brantley. It may take a few games, but don't be surprised if Brantley starts to catch the eye of NFL evaluators. He has the size, arm strength and ability to be a legit NFL prospect. However, he needs to show more consistency and improve on his nine-touchdown 10-interception season.
It all begins tomorrow as the Gators take on Florida Atlantic.
