US Open 2011 Results: Caroline Wozniacki, Mardy Fish Advance to Round of 32
Thursday at the US Open, two crowd favorites advanced to Round 32 with relative ease.
Caroline Wozniacki, the top-ranked woman in the draw, handled Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands
while Mardy Fish, the top American in the field, downed Tunisian Malek Jaziri.
Wozniacki vs. Rus
Wozniacki came away with a leisurely victory as she downed Rus 6-2, 6-0. She struggled in her service games early in the first set, but overcame them. Her play was still a little more defensive than many would like, but on this day it was more than enough to get the job done.
Aranxta Rus was hoping to continue what has been a pretty decent run at Grand Slam events. She has advanced past the first-round at three Grand Slams this year and at the French Open, where she defeated Kim Clijsters.
Wozniacki was simply trying to show once again that she should be taken seriously as a Grand Slam contender. For many, she still needs that elusive first Grand Slam title to legitimize her as the top player on the WTA Tour.
Wozniacki moves on to face promising young American Vania King. King, who is already established as one of the better doubles players on tour, is working her way towards becoming a serious challenger as a singles player. King is also coming off of a 6-2, 6-0 win over 29th seeded Jarmila Gajdosova.
Fish vs. Jaziri
Fish waltzed to an easy 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory of Malek Jaziri of Tunisia. Jaziri was only competitive in the third set, when it appeared that he finally began to settle in. Fish played aggressively, sensing that his opponent was uncomfortable and his serve was right on. He looks to be in great form.
Jaziri came into the match as something of a man of mystery. He is the first Tunisian man to win a match at a Grand Slam event and this was his first entrance into the main draw of a Grand Slam.
ESPN's Darren Cahill did a little digging prior to the match today and found that Jaziri had only played one other top-100 player in his career—Marcos Baghdatis in a David Cup tie. Fish was simply looking to get off the court in short order and he accomplished that.
Fish will move on to play a very intriguing match against the big South African Kevin Anderson. Anderson, a big hitter, is coming off of a win over 29th ranked Michael Llodra.
Expect a lot of quick points in the match between these two. Both have big serves and hit a lot of winners.
