Novak Djokovic: Why Djokovic's Scorching Season Is About to Fizzle out
Novak Djokovic's amazing season is about to come to a quiet ending, and it is largely a result of his greatness this year that his run cannot continue.
This has been a physically and emotionally draining run for Djokovic. He has tasted the joy of success that even his wildest dreams may not have imagined. That in and of itself can be a draining proposition.
Emotional highs can only carry a person for so long. At some point, they need time to recover.
Djokovic may have reached that point.
Due to a recent injury, Djokovic had time to step away from tennis and slow down. It is going to be hard for him to get back to speed.
I could hear it in his voice and see it in his words after he lost to Andy Murray at the Cincinnati open.
Djokovic, via the independent.co.uk, said:
""I've played so many matches this year. I've been winning a lot and reaching the final stages of each event. Considering the busy schedule, it's kind of normal to expect that at some stage you are exhausted, but I'm confident that I can recover and be ready for the US Open."
"
The confidence is still there, but the strain of a long season was on his mind. This guy is weary, and rightfully so. Not only emotionally, but physically.
While Djokovic expects to be healthy for the US Open, he is going to have quite a few matches before he will be able to claim another title. That is a lot of wear and tear for an ailing shoulder.
This is a deep and talented field, and that field is gunning for him. One of these players is going to pick off a vulnerable and drained Djokovic.
That is good news for the rest of the field. They need to get him while they can. He'll be back with a vengeance soon.
