Serena Williams: Williams Will Embarrass Field at US Open

Richard LangfordSep 2, 2011

Serena Williams is going to rout her way to the 2011 US Open title. In the process, she is going to embarrass the rest of the women's tennis field.

Serena is at her dominating best right now. In her first two matches at the US Open, she has lost just three games and beat Michaella Krajicek in a straight-sets 6-0, 6-1 rout Thursday.

There is simply not another player that can hang with Serena when the matches head to the hard court.

And this is where the embarrassment comes in.

Serena wasn't able to play tennis for over a year due to serious health concerns. She returned just before Wimbledon. And while she didn't win there, she began quickly shaking off the rust when play hit the hard court.

Serena was dominant in winning back-to-back titles at the Stanford Open and Rogers Cup. She kept that momentum and form rolling at the Cincinnati Masters but was forced to withdraw from the tournament with an injury.

Although many speculated it wasn't an injury at all.

SI.com presented various theories on her need to withdrawing that had little to do with injury:

"

Had she grown weary of crushing players in events that don't mean that much to her? Was she more concerned about being on hand for Kim Kardashian's wedding? Or did she find it alarmingly taxing to have played seven matches in eight days?

"

The reason she gave for withdrawing was a swollen big toe, but the message is clear. Serena is a barely more than a part-time player at this point. And yet that is enough for her to dominate.
