Minnesota Twins: Kyle Gibson Needs Surgery, Morneau Has Concussion Symptoms

Collin KottkeSep 1, 2011

The Twins pitching has been horrible this year. The whole team has been horrible this year. Part of the struggles may be because of the injury bug that doesn't seem to leave Target Field, but now that injury bug has hit in Rochester.

After an attempted rehab before surgery, Twins top pitching prospect Kyle Gibson will need Tommy John surgery after all.

Gibson will undergo surgery on September 7 with Dr. David Altchek, who is the same doctor who performed the surgery on Twins closer Joe Nathan.

Gibson had a 4.81 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 95.1 innings for the Red Wings, before the injury. Gibson was one of the non-roster invitees to spring training for the Twins this year, along with being ranked by Baseball America as the 34th best prospect in baseball.

Not only did the injury bug hit a top prospect, it once again hit for a former MVP. Justin Morneau is having concussion symptoms once again.

Morneau’s concussions all result from the minor collision at second base he was involved in on July 7, 2010 which derailed an MVP-caliber season for him, as he missed the whole rest of the season. Morneau has also had a hurt wrist and neck surgery that required time on the DL.

This season could not end quick enough for the Twins—just so they can get fully healthy. It will be a busy offseason for the Twins front office, who definitely need to make some changes. But if MVPs Joe Mauer and Morneau could get healthy this offseason, and stay healthy, then that may be the best offseason move of all.
