NHL Predictions: One Future Star from Each NHL Team

Nicholas GossJun 6, 2018

With the new NHL season about a month away, fans are excited to see their teams hit the ice, and for their young players to develop into stars.

Expectations are high for every player, whether you're a high draft pick or an established veteran.

Each team has a few players with star potential. Let's look at one future star from every team.

Nicholas Goss is a Boston Bruins featured columnist for Bleacher Report and was the organization's on-site reporter for the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals in Boston. Follow him on Twitter NHL news and analysis.

Anaheim Ducks: Bobby Ryan

1 of 30

The 24-year-old doesn't get the publicity that teammates Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry enjoy, but Bobby Ryan is becoming a star in his own right.

The former second overall pick scored 34 goals and dished out 37 assists last season, and is only going to get better on a Ducks team that has the potential to reach the Stanley Cup Finals.

Boston Bruins: Tyler Seguin

2 of 30

The Boston Bruins are hoping Tyler Seguin, the second overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft, will become a superstar in the near future.

He has an unbelievable skill set of speed, shooting accuracy, intelligence and work ethic.

Seguin scored 11 goals and dished out 10 assists last season while receiving limited ice time. He will play a much larger role on the Bruins this season.

Buffalo Sabres: Tyler Ennis

3 of 30

Tyler Ennis has 30-goal and 70-point potential, and had an impressive season last year with 20 goals and 29 assists.

The left winger will be a big part of the Buffalo Sabres' offense this season and in the future, and at 21 years old, he's only going to get better by playing for a playoff-contending team.

Calgary Flames: Sven Baertschi

4 of 30

Sven Baertschi is the best prospect in the Calgary Flames organization, and was the 13th overall pick of the 2011 NHL draft.

Baertschi is a super talented winger with strong puck skills and passing ability.

He will be a solid two-way player as well, and his work ethic is that of a 10-year veteran.

Carolina Hurricanes: Jeff Skinner

5 of 30

Jeff Skinner won the 2011 Calder Trophy last season as the NHL's Rookie of the Year, and will be a major part of the Carolina Hurricanes getting back to the playoffs this season.

The 19-year-old scored 31 goals and dished out 32 assists for 63 points, and there's no doubt he'll score 40 in the near future.

Skinner will become a legitimate star this season.

Chicago Blackhawks: Bryan Bickell

6 of 30

Bryan Bickell is a strong forward who had an impressive season last year when the Chicago Blackhawks lacked the depth they enjoyed during their Stanley Cup run.

Bickell scored 17 goals and had 20 assists in 2010-11, and will be even better this season. He could become one of the league's better forwards if develops well.

Colorado Avalanche: Matt Duchene

7 of 30

Matt Duchene is one of the best all-around young players in the NHL. His offensive, defensive and leadership abilities at such a young age are quite impressive.

Duchene will be a star in no time, and is one of the many young players who will lead the Colorado Avalanche back to the playoffs.

He also has great speed and puck handling ability, and his love for the game aids in his determination to get better and become as good as his boyhood hero, Peter Forsberg.

Columbus Blue Jackets: Steve Mason

8 of 30

The Columbus Blue Jackets hoped Steve Mason would become a top goaltender after winning the Calder Trophy in 2009 as the league's best rookie.

Mason had a decent year last season, but still has the potential to be a very good goalie. However, if he doesn't prove his worth this season, the Blue Jackets may move on.

Dallas Stars: Jamie Benn

9 of 30

In 69 games last season, Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn scored 22 goals and also had 34 assists.

Not only is he a very good all-around player who plays at a high level consistently, he's a great teammate.

Detroit Red Wings: Brendan Smith

10 of 30

The former first-round pick may see time at the NHL level this season, as the Detroit Red Wings look to find young blueliners to slowly replace future Hall of Famer Nicklas Lidstrom.

Smith has huge upside and will no doubt be a very good NHL defenseman.

Edmonton Oilers: Taylor Hall

11 of 30

After a sluggish start to his rookie season, Taylor Hall scored 22 goals with 20 assists last season for the Edmonton Oilers.

The first pick in the 2010 NHL draft, Hall will only get better this season because he'll be more comfortable, and he has all the skills needed to be an offensive machine.

30 goals will be the expectation for Hall this season.

Florida Panthers: Jacob Markstrom

12 of 30

Jacob Markstrom is the future between the pipes for the Florida Panthers, and should see a much larger role with the team this season.

He only played in one game last year, allowing two goals in a loss. But Markstrom is a very good goalie prospect, which is good because the Panthers haven't had a good young goaltender since Roberto Luongo.

Los Angeles Kings: Drew Doughty

13 of 30

You may consider Drew Doughty a star already, but he did follow his impressive 2009-10 season with a disappointing 2010-11 season where he scored 19 points less.

Doughty is still a restricted free agent, but it's very likely he will sign with the Kings long-term.

He is only 21 years old, and has the ability to be a Norris Trophy finalist for many years to come.

Minnesota Wild: Mikael Granlund

14 of 30

Mikael Granlund was the ninth overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft, and emerged as the premier forward prospect for the Minnesota Wild last season.

Granlund has real goal-scoring talent, and would be a welcome addition to an offensively challenged team if he can develop quickly and get to the NHL level soon.

Montreal Canadiens: PK Subban

15 of 30

Montreal Canadiens defenseman PK Subban is arguably the most talented young defenseman in the game, and his offensive abilities are stunning.

He handles the puck, skates like a forward and has a great slap shot. His defensive abilities are also strong, and he has good size and determination.

Subban will become an elite defenseman this season.

Nashville Predators: Colin Wilson

16 of 30

Colin Wilson has become a solid NHL player during his brief career, and has 30-goal potential for the offensively challenged Nashville Predators.

He does have good defensive skills, and if he plays a consistent role at center, his natural position, he will have a breakout season this year.

New Jersey Devils: Adam Larsson

17 of 30

The New Jersey Devils need a star defenseman and young prospect Adam Larsson could be that player this season.

He has great poise for a young player, and is a physical presence who can log major minutes.

There are few weaknesses to his game as he can play at both ends of the ice tremendously, while also displaying great leadership.

New York Islanders: John Tavares

18 of 30

The New York Islanders have many players for this list, but I thought John Tavares, the first overall pick in the 2009 NHL draft, was the right choice.

He has 40-goal potential this season, and scored 29 last season with 38 assists.

Tavares scored 13 more points last season than he did in his rookie season, and the Islanders will be looking for that improvement again this year.

New York Rangers: Derek Stepan

19 of 30

Derek Stepan began his career as a New York Rangers player with a hat trick, and finished his rookie season with 21 goals and 24 assists.

Stepan is becoming a reliable center for the Rangers, who need depth at that position.

He is poised to have a huge sophomore season, and will likely hit 30 goals with an improved Rangers offense around him.

Ottawa Senators: Erik Karlsson

20 of 30

Erik Karlsson is a very good young defenseman who has great offensive abilities.

He scored 13 goals with 32 assists last season, his first full one at the NHL level.

Karlsson has established himself as one of the best young defenseman in hockey, and will continue to learn the game playing alongside veteran Sergei Gonchar.

Philadelphia Flyers: Claude Giroux

21 of 30

When Claude Giroux helped lead the Philadelphia Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals with an impressive playoff run, they knew they had a star in the making.

With former captain Mike Richards and forward Jeff Carter gone, Giroux is the man in Philly.

The 23-year-old scored 25 goals with 51 assists last season and has superstar potential written all over him.

Not only can Giroux score goals and pass well, he gets down and dirty and is a gritty player.

Phoenix Coyotes: Oliver Ekman-Larsson

22 of 30

Oliver Ekman-Larsson was the sixth overall pick in the 2009 NHL draft, and although it's taken him some time to get used to the NHL, there is no doubt he has the skills to be a very good defenseman.

He hasn't wowed fans on the score sheet, but his physical presence and smart play will help the Coyotes build a solid roster for the future.

Pittsburgh Penguins: Jordan Staal

23 of 30

Jordan Staal was the second overall pick in the 2006 NHL draft and scored 49 points from 2007-09. He managed 30 points in only 42 games last season.

Back healthy this year, Staal will hit the 60-point mark and will have an increased role in the offense due to the absence of Sidney Crosby while he recovers from concussions.

San Jose Sharks: Logan Couture

24 of 30

Logan Couture will become a superstar this season after an impressive rookie season last year where he scored 32 goals and dished out 24 assists.

Couture was rewarded last week with a new contract extension, and will be a major part of the San Jose Sharks' mission to finally win the Stanley Cup this season.

Couture could score 40 goals this season, and may flirt with 50 later in his career.

St. Louis Blues: TJ Oshie

25 of 30

TJ Oshie is a very talented forward who was on pace to eclipse his 48-point mark in 2010 before he got injured last season.

In 43 games last season, Oshie scored 12 goals with 22 assists.

Back healthy this season, Oshie will be an integral part of the St. Louis Blues' offense, and he must play at least 70 games for them to make the playoffs.

Tampa Bay Lightning: Victor Hedman

26 of 30

I'm going to consider Steven Stamkos a superstar already, so defenseman Victor Hedman will represent the Lightning on this list.

Hedman has made the transition to the NHL very well, and is a big, strong presence on the ice. If he can be as dominant as Zdeno Chara of the Bruins (pictured on the right), then the Tampa Bay fans will be very happy.

He scored 25 points last season for the Lightning.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Luke Schenn

27 of 30

Luke Schenn will be a defensive star for a long time, and hopefully as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He currently is a restricted free agent with the team.

Schenn is a physical presence on the ice and led NHL defensemen last season with 251 hits.

His offensive abilities will get better, but there's no question he can be a top shut-down d-man who has captain potential.

Vancouver Canucks: Cory Schneider

28 of 30

Cory Schneider may seem an odd pick for this list, but I genuinely think he could have a better season, at least in the playoffs, than Roberto Luongo will for the Vancouver Canucks this year.

Schneider played well in the 2011 playoffs, especially in the Stanley Cup Finals, where he shut down the Bruins for nearly his entire time in net.

Schneider has high trade value and could easily be a starting goalie right now, so the Canucks have an interesting choice to make about his future.

Washington Capitals: Mathieu Perreault

29 of 30

Mathieu Perreault is one of the many young and talented forwards the Washington Capitals are fortunate to have.

He needs to be more consistent, but he could easily become the Capitals No. 2 center in the near future.

Perreault is a bit undersized but has the work ethic and fight to not let himself be pushed around by larger players.

Winnipeg Jets: Evander Kane

30 of 30

Anybody who one-punches Matt Cooke like this is a star in my book. But on a more serious note, Evander Kane has real star potential, and will bring excitement to the fans of Winnipeg.

Kane is a goal scorer and one of the better power forwards. He's battled some injury problems lately, but if he can consistently stay healthy, he'll be one of the most exciting players in the NHL.
