Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Washington Redskins: Count Your Blessings

Tom EdringtonSep 1, 2011

Tune in to tonight's final preseason game up in the nation's capital and count your blessings, Buccaneer fans.

Imagine for a moment if you were a fan of the Washington Redskins.

Imagine how excited you'd be coming into this season off that sparkling 4-12 record last year.

Now imagine further how exciting it must be to anticipate that your starting quarterback will be either John Beck or Rex Grossman? Wow, knocks your socks off doesn't it.

Imagine where your Buccaneers might be going this season if you had to choose from those two wonderkids.

Imagine where your Buccaneers might be if the Glazers had pulled Mike Shanahan off the scrap heap of coaching and stuck him in here where he could bully his players and see how little he can get out of them?

Now as much as the Glazers might make you cringe, simply imagine the clueless Daniel Synder throwing money at over-the-hill, but big-name free agents and serving you a plate of poop and telling you its filet mignon.

As expensive as the Buccaneer tickets may be, you don't want to see the ticket prices in Washington.

OK, enough of the debacle in Washington. It should make you plenty thankful for the Buccaneers.

Now on to tonight's game.

What you basically have is a final job interview for about, maybe, perhaps seven or eight guys.

You won't see Josh Freeman, you won't see much of anyone you'd actually WANT to see.

You'll see Josh Johnson putting down more film that could earn him a shot at a starting job somewhere else next year. Which leads us to Rudy Carpenter. Do the Buccaneers keep three quarterbacks this season? If they do, that's telling you in advance that they're already planning for life without Josh Johnson, the young fella that Raheem Morris has condemned to be a "career backup" to Freeman.

Career backup? That's what Beck or Grossman should be.

There are a lot of unsettled situations going into this final "it doesn't count" game that may cause you some concern. The offensive line hasn't looked sharp and as a result, neither has Freeman and there's been no running game.

You'll get a closer look at the guys behind Blount tonight.

There's the battle for the third tight end spot, the cornerback battle and the wide receiver battle, but you really and truly have to thing that the Bucs have a pretty good idea of who will be staying around come Saturday when they have to trim their roster to 53.

Yes, it's preseason game No. 4, something to endure, but perhaps its better than nothing, but barely.

Things could be worse.

John Beck or Rex Grossman?

Count your blessings, Buccaneer fans.
