Why I Now Call It The Brocktagon

Todd JacksonNov 18, 2008

As some of you know, I enjoy baseball as much, if not more, than fighting.  To further that, I am a Yankee fan to the bone.  Go ahead and laugh it up, I'll wait.  I enjoy the history of the sport, and most of all the rivalries.

Some of you may recall, some may not: Quite a few years back, the Yanks decimated then Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez.  Pedro had a choice quote for the media and Yankee fans alike following that game: "I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy."

Well, now that I'm out of hibernation after a bout with a serious cold that subdued me all weekend long, today "I just tip my hat and call Brock Lesnar my daddy."

After my recent judgement of his skills and ability, as well as his legitimacy as an MMA fighter, I think I can at least say that much.

I took a chance and wrote an article, absolutely convinced that Randy would take Brock to school and eat his lunch while he was there.  I think by now we all know that did not even come close to happening.

I'm a gambling man.  I tend to place wagers that make little to no sense, just to see the look on the face of the person I'm betting.

I lost a bet with my wife this past Saturday night.

She usually goes for the better looking of the two fighters, a safe bet, right? Who doesnt bet that way?  Well Saturday night she couldnt choose the better looking fighter, I would have been frightened if she had, so she went with the smart bet and went for Brock.

The bet: If Brock wins, I have to refer to the Octagon as "the Brocktagon" until he loses his belt.  My idea, by the way.  What a damned fool I am.

Needless to say, I hollered for Randy as long as Brock allowed me to.  He could have indulged me a bit longer, couldn't he?  Nah, why not beat my pick in decisive fashion, leaving me in utter ruin.

In the end, this is why I now refer to the little eight sided ring we all know so well as it is properly known in my household.

The Brocktagon.

Little did I know her sister was at the event texting away the whole night.  This may have been a loaded bet on her part but hey, a little humble pie never hurt anyone, right Matt Serra?

Seriously, my hat is off to Brock and all the people who supported him.  He did surprisingly well.  Not the lay and pray many expected, but an improved stand up, a sturdy chin, and being "a big sombich, that's all there is to it" as Randy said, doesn't hurt either.

I have my foot lodged deep in my mouth, but I spit it out occasionaly for the humble pie I ordered so many helpings of.

In the end, I just wanted to prove I can be humble in defeat when I am wrong.  I just hope Nog or Mir is up to the task of taking that belt so I can get things back to normal around my house.

"The Brocktagon". What the hell was I thinking?
