Liverpool Transfer News: 5 Last Second Deals Reds Must Make to Save Face

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish continues to peruse the market with the deadline just hours away.

The Reds could still use a backup striker and perhaps an impact addition in the midfield while the rumor mill continues to spin, connecting several big-name players with a move to Anfield.

Unfortunately, with so many media outlets trying to break news, it is hard to find the line between actual gossip and complete fabrication. That means you have to be very selective in choosing the sites to trust leading up to window closing.

Dalglish might spend more time selling than buying over the next few hours. The Reds' boss has made it clear which players aren't a part of his plans and gave those guys a chance to look for an escape from the Liverpool bench.

Without further ado, here are five deadline deals the Reds should make today.

Adam Johnson – IN

1 of 5

Adam Johnson is one of the fresher names on the market and is expected to draw interest from several teams. Liverpool is rumored to be in on the 24-year-old midfielder as they look to build some depth at the position.

He has scored 22 goals over the past two seasons with Middlesbrough, Manchester City and the England national team. His natural ability coupled with a great work ethic makes him a hot commodity at the deadline.

The Mirror Football afternoon spy video talks about Johnson and some possible landing spots. If Kenny Dalglish wants to make a huge splash, the left-footed winger would be the guy to target.

Fabio Aurelio – OUT

2 of 5

Fabio Aurelio is a talented defender, even at 31 years old, but just can't stay healthy. With the addition of Sebastian Coates to the back line, Aurelio becomes available and could still have some nice value to a desperate team.

He hasn't played a game with the squad this season due to injury and now would be a good time for Liverpool to rid themselves of the fragile fullback. While he won't fetch the same price he would have a couple seasons ago, he could still bring in enough cash for another striker.

Since joining the Reds in 2006, Aurelio has never played more than 32 games in a season. For a team that wants to contend for trophies, that just isn't acceptable from a player you expect to contribute.

Yossi Benayoun – IN

3 of 5

Yossi Benayoun has been rumored to be making a return to Liverpool for around a month now, but no progress has been made to complete the deal.

Benayoun wouldn't have much resale value, so the Reds might be a little cautious to bring him back to the team. That said, he is an attacking midfielder that could be moved up top if necessary and would be the type of depth addition Liverpool needs.

He scored 18 goals in 92 appearances with the team from '07-'10 and fits the Liverpool style well. While Benayoun might not be the most exotic option available, he is a reliable option at a good price.

Raul Meireles – OUT

4 of 5

Kenny Dalglish doesn't have a spot available for Raul Meireles to get consistent playing time and that isn't going to work for the fiery 28-year-old midfielder.

Meireles is a good defensive mid that plays a physical style, which just doesn't fit in with the way Dalglish is trying to mold the squad. He should have a handful of productive seasons left, they just won't be with Liverpool.

The Reds declined an offer for him from Chelsea, although the Daily Mail says the deal isn't completely dead. It seems like he will be one the move but the question is to where?

Mauro Zarate – IN

5 of 5

Lazio striker Mauro Zarate has been targeted by big name clubs across Europe throughout the summer. He has scored 25 goals over the past three seasons, including 13 in '08-'09, and could be the answer to the goal-scoring woes of Liverpool.

Not only does he find the back of the net on a consistent basis, he is a great playmaker as well. In all likelihood the Reds would only be able to snag him on loan, but might be able to work out a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Zarate should continue to improve and might thrive with a stronger supporting cast. He would be a huge last-minute addition for Kenny Dalglish.
