Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler: "Florida Controls Own Destiny"...NOT SO FAST!

Jeff KalafaNov 17, 2008

Within the last two weeks, Kirk Herbstreit, Chris Fowler, and others have claimed that "Florida controls its own destiny."  If they win, they are in the BCS Championship Game.

I'm not buying this at all!  In Fowler's case, I'll chalk it up to a "rush to judgment."  In Herbstreit's, it just another statement that I'll file in the column under "rash statements" along with "Les Miles has accepted the Michigan job."

Yes, if Florida wins out, they have an excellent chance to get to the championship game.  I'm just saying that it's not etched in stone and I wouldn't be surprised if Florida is not chosen to play in the championship game, even if they win the rest of their games.

The reason I'm not sold on Herbstreit and Fowler's presumption (and that's what it is), is that Texas Tech could go undefeated and would have to play a team with one loss.

Florida would have one loss if they win out, and Texas would have one loss if they win out.

In such a situation, and if Texas Tech beats Oklahoma—which is very likely—I do believe that Texas should get the nod over the Gators.  I say this for two reasons: 1) Body of work and 2) Nature of the one loss.

I know Florida is beating teams by 50 points while looking unstoppable but Alabama would be the only signature win they would have.

Yes, they have beaten the likes of Miami, LSU, Georgia and will probably beat FSU, but these teams are very good, not great.

Texas has a signature win over Oklahoma and has beaten Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Kansas.  Texas beat Oklahoma, Missouri, and Oklahoma State back to back to back.  This is more impressive than anything Florida will have done this season.

As for the one loss Texas has on its record: They lost on the road 39-33 to Texas Tech, which will be ranked No. 1 if Florida beats Alabama.

Texas lost this game the week after they played Oklahoma State.  The four consecutive games Texas played (Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech) was the toughest four-game stretch anyone who follows the game can ever remember.

Florida's lost at home to Ole Miss 31-30 on Sept. 27. THERE IS NO PLASTIC SURGERY FOR A HOME LOSS TO OLE MISS!

Herbstreit and Fowler will continue to support Florida's entitlement to play in the championship game, and Florida will keep running up huge winning margins to back up  Herbstreit and Fowler's statement.

I don't believe Florida is destined to play in the championship game if they win their last three games. Texas, if they win their final game against Texas A&M, will be more deserving than the Gators.

Yes folks, a Texas Tech-Texas rematch, as mundane as it sounds, will be the fair and logical match-up to see in this year's BCS Championship game if Florida, Texas and Texas Tech all win out.

One last thing...the coaches poll has had Florida above Texas the last two weeks, but the BCS puts Texas on top...a win over an undefeated Alabama would give Florida a big bump, but there is still a chance that Alabama gets knocked off by Auburn (throw away the records in this rivalry) and won't enter the SEC Conference Championship undefeated.

Nothing is definite at this time.
