WWE Super SmackDown Preview: 4 Things To Expect During Tonight's Show

Kaleb KelchnerJun 7, 2018

Tonight on Syfy, the WWE is going live with a Super SmackDown that will feature stars from both Raw and SmackDown.

For this rare occasion, we'll be breaking down the four big things we can expect out of tonight's show.

The show is headlined by a steel cage match between WWE Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton, and former Heavyweight Champion, Christian.  That's not the only blockbuster match on the card though.

WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio will be taking on Sin Cara, and John Cena will face off against Wade Barrett.  Let's also not forget CM Punk is scheduled to take on The Great Khali!

With the two massive announcements made by Triple H last night, that the Raw and SmackDown rosters would be working together to create a Raw "super shows", and that CM Punk will be facing Triple H himself at Night of Champions, there's a lot to chew on in regards to what we can expect tonight!

Check out the following slides, and see if our expectations line up with yours!

The Feud Between Randy Orton and Christian Comes to a Close

1 of 4

Barring any curves from the WWE creative team, this may be the most obvious expectation of the night.

Randy Orton and Christian have put on some quality matches during their feud, but it's time to bring it to a close, and send Christian on while future challengers rise up the ranks to challenge Orton for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

A steel cage match should lead to a definitive end to their feud, with Orton retaining the title, and facing Mark Henry at Night of Champions.

Anything can happen, I suppose, but it just doesn't make sense to keep Christian in the picture after losing the title at SummerSlam.

Whether or not obscurity lies in Christian's future is anyone's guess, but I think he's done good enough work in this feud to earn a significant role in a midcard feud.  As for Randy Orton, well, he's Randy Orton!

Some Superstars Get Lost in the Shuffle

2 of 4

With the WWE stacking this live Super SmackDown with matches featuring key superstars from Raw like CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio, and John Cena, it's a given that some of the SmackDown midcard will be getting lost in the shuffle tonight.

Some critics believe that this shuffle will be a permanent move that hinders the WWE moving forward as they merge shows.

I have a feeling that the team running the machine that is WWE have enough forethought to anticipate this, and make adjustments accordingly.

Two names that may miss some air time are Daniel Bryan, and WWE Intercontinental Champion, Cody Rhodes.  Not to mention Ted DiBiase, who had a great performance against Randy Orton on last weeks show.

There's of course, a chance that the WWE works in a match they can stack with multiple superstars from SmackDown, and make it a showcase match for the brand.  There's really know need for every match to be interpromotional.

Fans need to keep in mind that the big goal for this show is ratings, as scoring big on this live show may be critical to any future moves involving WWE programming.  Let's see how this plays out before crying wolf.

Interaction Between John Cena and Alberto Del Rio

3 of 4

Noticeably missing from last night's Raw, was WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio.

I had expected to see some development in his feud with John Cena, but when Cena called him out, we got Mark Henry instead.

Now with both men scheduled to be on the card, it's nearly guaranteed that Cena will get to give Del Rio a piece of his mind.

With so much going on in the show, I expect it to be wrestling heavy, but considering that Del Rio is very unlikely to lose against Sin Cara, as well as Del Rio's hobby of attacking defeated opponents after a match, it shouldn't be a stretch to expect Cena to make the save for Sin Cara.

This feud needs some attention tonight, rather than leaving it on hold for next week's Raw, so expect it to see some play, if only a little.

Kevin Nash Will Still Want a Shot at CM Punk

4 of 4

Kevin Nash was likely the most disgruntled man in Oklahoma after Raw went off the air last night.

After pleading with Triple H to get a match with CM Punk at Night of Champions, he was finally granted his wish.

The match, since the rumors of it began to leak, has been ridiculed and largely dismissed by fans.  Nash was never exactly the best in-ring worker, even when he didn't have to dye his hair to be allowed on camera.

Also, CM Punk is a hot commodity, and going from two pay-per-view main event matches with John Cena, to a one off scrap with Kevin Nash just doesn't add up.

That didn't change the fact that it came as a surprise to fans when Triple H informed CM Punk at the end of Raw that the match with Nash was off, and that Punk would be facing Triple H himself at Night of Champions.  Without a doubt, Nash will take issue with the move.

Tonight, expect to see Nash continue to butt heads with Triple H, and possibly try to find his way into the match at Night of Champions.

So, Bleachers, how do our expectations stand up to yours?  No, hilarious Booker T commentary doesn't count!
