Chelsea Transfer Rumours: 4 Reasons the Blues Don't Need Luka Modric

Dan RenfroJun 7, 2018

Chelsea have been adamant they want Luka Modric. However, they don't need him.

Sure, adding a world-class midfielder is always a nice thing, but it just isn't the right time. According to the Hindustan Times, the Blues are considering a £40-million bid for Modric.

Are you kidding me?!?

Yes, Modric is a fantastic player, but the Croatian is hardly worth that much. Roman Abramovich overpaid for Fernando Torres in January, and now he wants to overpay again. If he waits until January, he could probably get Modric (or a player of similar quality) for a much better price.

Andre Villas-Boas is instilling a system of free-flowing attack. That change can't be made overnight. It doesn't make sense to keep bringing in new players, simply to fit the system. Unfortunately, it will take time.

Accordingly, I have compiled a list of four reasons why Chelsea should remain patient and pass on Modric—for now.

Price

1 of 4

I alluded to it in the last slide, but it's true. Luka Modric is not worth £40 million.

He has never had more than five goals or six assists in a single season. Yes, he does a lot without the ball. And yes, he is still improving as a player. However, it is tough for me to get excited for a player that hasn't truly produced.

Modric is a creative player. Roman Abramovich is craving some creative players for his club. With that said, it doesn't mean he has to be desperate and overpay for a good (not great) player.

The price is simply too high.

Current Midfield

Right now, the midfield isn't playing poorly.

Ramires has become a stud, moving box-to-box in the midfield. John Obi Mikel has been solid at the holding midfield position, considering Michael Essien is the true owner of that position.

Unfortunately, Frank Lampard has looked lost at times, but he is slowly understanding the new system. Within the next couple of weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if he started to look dangerous again.

While Florent Malouda leaves much to be desired, Juan Mata could easily take his place. Mata played for nearly half an hour (with all that stoppage time) last week, and he looked dangerous. I expect him to get more play as the season goes along, eventually becoming the clear-cut starter.

Therefore, the midfield doesn't need a new face. Lampard has done too much for this club to be thrown out the door, simply because the new coach wants a younger, fresher face. He deserves more than that.

If the midfield starts to drop off, I could understand the necessity of the move. However, right now, this move just seems like a want, rather than a need.

January Transfer Window

3 of 4

Roman Abramovich isn't afraid to open his wallet in the middle of the season.

Last year, Chelsea had a dip in form, which prompted their owner to go out and get a centre-back (David Luiz) and a striker (Fernando Torres).

No, those transfers did not bring Chelsea any silverware. However, it did prove they aren't afraid to try and get better during the season.

As a result, why don't Chelsea remain patient? Maybe, in January, they will have a more pressing need due to an injury, unrest or poor form. If they spend more money now, that January transfer becomes more unlikely.

It may appear like the money is never-ending, but only so much money can be thrown around, and I think it would be better suited to be thrown around later rather than sooner.

Team Chemistry

4 of 4

Since coming to Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas has been trying to get the team to play his type of football.

The "old guard" for Chelsea has been more than willing to adapt to the different tactics. While it takes some getting used to, most of the players are improving on a week-to-week basis.

If Chelsea make a last-minute transfer, they will be setting themselves back. Luka Modric will need some time to get accustomed to playing in this system with these players, and it could affect the mood in the locker room.

Right now, the two clubs from Manchester are miles ahead of everyone, and Chelsea can't afford to take any steps back if they want to compete for the English Premier League title.

Obviously, they do want to compete. Accordingly, I think they should stick with the squad now and see how it turns out. Come January (or next summer), if this squad isn't getting the job done, then it will be time to make a change.

Not yet.
