UFC 134 Results: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Says He's Back, Wants Rematch with Mir

John HeinisAug 29, 2011

In a huge upset, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria defeated highly touted prospect Brendan Schaub at UFC 134 in front of an overwhelmingly supportive Rio de Janeiro crowd.

According to an interview with Tatame.com, Minotauro said that he would like to have a rematch with Frank Mir next now that he has re-established himself as a relevant heavyweight in the UFC.

Big Nog also wasn’t picky as to when the fight happens:

“I’d like to fight Frank Mir, I want to fight UFC Japan. I’d like to fight UFC Canada, which will happen later this year. Fighting Frank Mir is something I’d love to do. I’m motivated to fight him.”

Mir defeated Nogueira for the interim UFC heavyweight title via TKO at UFC 92.

A rematch was scheduled at UFC 119, but Nog had to pull out due to knee surgery.

Mir ended up defeating fill-in Mirko Cro Cop at the event, in what just about every fight fan considered an extremely lackluster main event.

Interestingly, Mir recently told Middle Easy that Alistair Overeem is the main he’d like to fight next, but also said that he’d just like a fight soon regardless who his opponent is.

“I just want to fight again, it doesn’t matter who…Alistair Overeem would be cool if he actually came over. I think he’s a great fighter, I think he’s done a lot in this sport, his K-1 accomplishments, I think he’s an immediate threat. I’d like to test myself against him.”

Additionally, Nogueira thanked those fans who believed in him heading into UFC 134.

“For those who believed in me or not, because I knew there’d be people in there who didn’t believe in me but would cheer for me...I came from a loss by knockout, I came from three surgeries, and they weren’t simple surgeries, so I get it...,” big Nog said.

“I went through three surgeries on my hip and knees. For those who believed in me or not, I want to say I accepted this fight in short notice, but I’d like to tell people I’m back. I’m back now.”

Nogueira is also very serious about having another heavyweight title run left in him, as he also mentioned that he plans on fighting in Brazil again before he retires.

“I still have a lot to do and I want to represent Brazil many times and fight in Brazil again.”

Mir is generally considered a top five heavyweight in MMA, can Minotauro handle a challenge of this caliber at this stage in his career?
