Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Embodies America, Obama Should Take Note
Mention the name Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and you’re more likely than not going to get a strong reaction. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying his talents and ability. You don’t get an unblemished 41-0 record without talent. You also don’t get that record without being slightly risk-averse.
Mayweather still hasn’t fought what many believe to be the opponent who will ultimately blemish that record: Manny Pacquiao.
America never went to a shooting war with the Soviets either (More on that later).
The reason Mayweather evokes such a visceral response in people is his attitude. The man is good. He knows it. You know it. And if you don’t know it, he’ll tell you how good he is. The man is rich. He knows it. You know it. And if you don’t know it, he’ll show you the diamonds, the cars and houses before he’ll let you know it’s all paid for.
The man lacks humility.
Or does he?
After every one of his victories that I’ve seen, he’s often gracious to his opponent. He comments on how hard they fought and gives them respect.
Prior to the fight?
There are no kind words. There is no mutual respect. There is simply talk of utter dominance, utter destruction. You have no chance. You have no prayer. You have no hope.
"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win." – Sun Tzu
That is Floyd Mayweather’s philosophy. It oozes from every word, and every pour.
It’s also the American Way.
“You go in to win, and you go in to win decisively” – Colin Powell
Mayweather is the rare breed of trash-talker that not only backs up his claims, but often exceeds them.
Americans might like to think of themselves as self-centered, pompous or lacking in humility, but we do and we are.
Boisterous claims of the greatest country in the world, or talk of American exceptionalism, thrust across the world with American Flag-carrying super carrier groups.
If we aren’t saying “I wonder if I can kick your ass. Not just you, but all of you” when the USS Nimitz blazes across the Oceans, than what are we saying?
However, we’ve seemed to have lost some of that. I don’t think President Barack Obama is an apologist, but he’s not far from it. Have we done plenty to apologize for? Sure. We’ve also done a hell of a lot of good.
More than any other country in the world.
We also have the world’s strongest military, largest economy, and best sports, television, movies and music.
Perhaps the President should embody some of that and some of Mayweather’s attitude and maybe he’ll get people believing in this land again. There’s never a shadow of a doubt that Mayweather believes in himself and his ability. Perhaps we need a leader that not only believes in himself, but believes in the true exceptionalism that is America.
Floyd for President?
No way, not enough money.
