UFC 134 Results: Anderson Silva Opts to Face 'Clone' over Sonnen and Hendo
At UFC 134, Yushin Okami may have been UFC champion Anderson Silva's final significant hurdle in cleaning out the entire middleweight division.
Having defeated the likes of Dan Henderson, Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort, Demian Maia, Nate Marquardt, and Rich Franklin, Silva's legendary résumé was missing only one name—Yushin Okami.
The two had fought previously in January 2006 at Rumble on the Rock 8, where Okami was awarded the victory after Silva landed an illegal upkick that left the Japanese superstar unable to continue.
On Saturday night, Silva and Okami met again under the bright lights of the UFC in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and in this meeting, the Brazilian would be the one leaving with his hand raised.
The anticipated title bout ended at 2:04 of the second round after Silva dropped Okami with precision strikes on the feet and finished up with a vicious ground assault that forced the ref to call a halt to the action.
"I train with the best guys in the world and the best team in the world. Team Nogueira is the best," Silva said in a UFC post-fight interview. "I train against Cigano (Junior dos Santos), I train against Rafael "Feijao" (Cavalcante), Antonio Rogerio (Nogueira), Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" (Nogueira). I'm training for the best guys in the world."
What's next for Silva?
If he retired today, Silva would be considered by many as the greatest of all time. He has smashed a multitude of UFC records, including longest title reign (five years), most consecutive wins (14), most consecutive title defenses (nine), and most successful title defenses (nine).
Unless he decides to move up to 205 pounds, there really is nothing more for Silva to do in the sport except build upon a grandiose legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
With that said, there are interesting fights still out there for Silva at 185 pounds.
Sonnen and Henderson have already been listed at the front of the herd of possible contenders for the UFC title.
A rematch with Henderson, the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, would set up a champion-versus-champion showdown between two legendary figures in the sport.
Before abandoning his game plan and making the fatal mistake to slug it out with Silva, Henderson was successful in the first round of their UFC 82 bout in utilizing his superior wrestling to secure the takedown and rack up points from top position.
Out of any fight that could be put together, a rematch with Sonnen, who was less than two minutes away from defeating Silva at UFC 117, is the most intriguing bout right now. There is so much built-up animosity between both fighters, and a second showdown would net hordes of hype.
If Sonnen defeats top-10 middleweight contender Brian Stann at UFC 136, fans may get to witness one of the greatest grudge matches of our time.
The world may be preparing for "The Spider" versus Sonnen or Henderson, but neither guy seems to be on the champ's personal itinerary. When asked who he hopes to face next, Silva merely grinned and gave a unique answer.
"Next? My clone, yeah, my clone."
