UFC 134 Results: Inside the Numbers and Statistics
The UFC's first trip to Brazil in more than a decade saw Anderson Silva continue to rewrite the record books. Every time the UFC middleweight champion steps into the Octagon, he converts doubters into believers.
At this point, I'm not sure how there could be any doubters remaining. With his ninth consecutive title defense, Silva is beginning to erase any controversy surrounding the argument that he is the best mixed martial artist of all time.
Now that we've all had a chance to witness greatness and check out the results from the rest of the UFC 134 card, it's time to delve deeper into the event.
Let's take a closer look at some of the more interesting statistics and numbers coming out of UFC 134.
Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami
1 of 510 - The number of wins Anderson Silva has accumulated in UFC title fights, which broke his tie with Matt Hughes for the most in UFC history. In case you are wondering, depending on whether or not you count his win in an interim title fight with Matt Hughes, Georges St-Pierre has eight or nine wins in UFC title fights.
24 - Amount of fights Yushin Okami had competed in since the last time he was finished by an opponent. During that time, Okami had fought the likes of Rich Franklin, Jake Shields, Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt. That streak spanned nearly eight years since Okami was knocked out by Amar Suloev in October 2003.
.500 - Silva's winning percentage in six fights against Japanese fighters prior to his victory over Okami. Silva's only prior wins over Japanese fighters came against Alexander Otsuka, Hayato Sakurai and Tetsuji Kato in 2001 and 2002.
Three - The number of consecutive losses Silva had suffered against Japanese fighters heading into UFC 134. In 2003 and 2004, Silva was submitted by Daiju Takase and Ryo Chonan. Then, Silva was disqualified from a well-documented fight with Yushin Okami in January 2006.
Mauricio Rua vs. Forrest Griffin
2 of 585 - The percentage of Mauricio Rua's 20 career victories that have ended in knockouts. The only decision victories of Rua's career came against Kazuhiro Nakamura in December 2006 and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in June 2005.
Seven - The number of past, present or eventual UFC champions that Forrest Griffin has fought consecutively. That streak dates back to Griffin's first fight with Rua in September 2007. Sandwiched between Griffin's two meetings with Rua are bouts against Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, Anderson Silva, Tito Ortiz and Rich Franklin.
71.43 - The percentage of Griffin's losses that have ended in knockouts. For a fighter that gets into regular slugfests, one has to begin to wonder what effect this damage may begin to have on the former UFC light heavyweight champion.
0 - The number of times Rua has lost in the UFC when taking less than six months off between bouts. In fact, timing issues can also be attributed to Rua's two other career losses prior to joining the UFC.
One of those losses was suffered in a fight against Mark Coleman that took place only two days short of that six-month mark. The other came against Renato Sobral in Rua's second fight in one evening.
Edson Barboza vs. Ross Pearson
3 of 510 - According to Compustrike, the difference between the 70 strikes landed by Ross Pearson and 60 that found their mark for Edson Barboza. Barboza was awarded the victory in a very close split decision. Barboza stuffed four Pearson takedown attempts and inflicted more damage during the bout.
0:06 - The amount of time both fighters spent on the ground during this 20-minute fight. This is the second straight fight that Barboza has been involved in that was mostly a pure striking match. Barboza's prior fight with Anthony Njokuani was also decided by a narrow decision.
66.67 - Percentage of Barboza's three UFC fights that have earned him Fight of the Night honors. Barboza and Pearson were each awarded $100,000 for their efforts at UFC 134.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub
4 of 5Six - Years that passed between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's knockout of Brendan Schaub and his previously most recent knockout win over Pawel Nastula. Nogueira has only recorded three knockout wins during his illustrious career, with the third coming against Sanae Kikuta in August 2002.
90 - The percentage of Schaub's fights that have ended in knockouts. Schaub has scored seven impressive knockouts in his career, all but one of which came in the first round. However, Schaub has also been knocked out in the opening frame of two bouts, which now brings his chin into question. The only one of Schaub's fights to go to a decision was a dominant win over Gabriel Gonzaga.
0 - The number of times Nogueira has lost consecutive fights during his 12-year career. Nogueira has lost six times in 41 career appearance, but not once have those losses come in back-to-back showings. The Brazilian legend seems to always make the adjustments needed to get himself back on track after tasting defeat.
Stanislav Nedkov vs. Luiz Cane
5 of 522 - Overhand rights thrown by Stanislav Nedkov in less than one round at UFC 134. The Bulgarian's offense consisted of one strike, but Luiz Cane still couldn't defend it, as Nedkov scored a technical knockout in the fight's opening frame.
6.67% - Percentage of Cane's fights that have gone the distance. In 16 career appearances, Cane has only had a single outcome decided by the judges. That lone fight against Steve Cantwell resulted in a unanimous decision victory for Cane.
12 - The amount of consecutive wins Nedkov has accumulated since the beginning of his career in April 2006. Nedkov's performances are rarely described with the word perfection, but the UFC newcomer continually finds a way to get the job done.
Nedkov remained undefeated with his win at UFC 134 and will have a chance to climb toward the light heavyweight contenders in his next fight.
