NFL Roster Cuts 2011: 10 New York Giants Who Will Be Released on Tuesday
I've read multiple places that each NFL team will have to trim their roster down to 80 on Tuesday, but last night during the Texans game, they said the teams have to be down to 75.
I'm going to just assume the ABC crew was wrong and go with what everyone else is reporting, that the Giants will have to cut 10 players on Tuesday.
This isn't going to be an in-depth analysis as to why these players are going to be cut, because the major cut down to the 53-man roster doesn't happen until September 6.
So the players leaving you either never heard of, or know exactly why they are being cut. With that said, let's take a look at who'll be looking for work on Wednesday.
Ibrahim Abdulai, DT
1 of 10The Giants are pretty set at defensive tackle and will likely be making multiple cuts at the position to keep guys at other positions (CB, WR).
Brant Clouser, G
2 of 10Chris Snee, Mitch Petrus, David Diehl, Kevin Boothe...there just isn't room for many guards on the roster right now. They are set at that position.
David Sims, S
3 of 10The Giants have one of the deepest safety units in the league, and with the signing of Derrick Martin and Deon Grant, it makes losing David Sims that much more likely.
Jarriel King, OT
4 of 10Jarriel King was an undrafted free-agent signing who's been getting reps in training camp, but he won't beat out Jamon Meredith, who's been having a better camp and may not even make the team himself.
Christian Hopkins, TE
5 of 10You would think the Giants would keep as many tight ends around given their situation, but Hopkins has done little to impress.
Todd Watkins, WR
6 of 10I keep reading about plays from practice like, "Michael Coe made a nice interception on a ball that went through Todd Watkins' hands," or others like that. If you're buried in the depth chart, it doesn't bode well if you drop passes.
Ike Ndukwe, G
7 of 10Despite making a great block on Da'Rel Scott's 97-yard touchdown run against the Bears on Monday night, the Giants are pretty much set at guard, like I mentioned. The only way Ndukwe stays on the team is if the Giants need bodies for the third-team offensive line in the final preseason game.
Jarrard Tarrant, S
8 of 10As I said in the Sims slide, there isn't much room on the roster for safeties when they have five already that they like, with four of them likely making the team.
Derrick Martin, Sims and Tarrant are fighting for spots, and Martin has been a solid special teams contributor in the league, which will gain him favor among the coaching staff.
Craig Marshall, DE
9 of 10This slide could have easily been Justin Trattou. Honestly, I have no idea what the coaches are thinking, but one of those two are going to be cut. Trattou had a good game last Monday, but who makes the next cut might depend on who impresses more tomorrow night.
The Giants have plenty of defensive ends, but you know how much they like them. I'm expecting the Giants to keep as many corners as they can to feel out who should make the final roster, so other guys could be cut that are actually more talented than those who stick around.
Dwayne Hendricks, DT
10 of 10The Giants brought in Jimmy Kennedy and Gabe Watson and re-signed Rocky Bernard after letting him go.
Yea, I'd say Hendricks will be back on the practice squad come September.
