Victor Ortiz Says Floyd Mayweather Is "Hype" and "Not as Great as People Think"

Justin TateJun 7, 2018

24-year-old Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 Knockouts) is hard at work with trainer, Danny Garcia to prepare for war on September 17.

Ortiz is slated to defend his WBC welterweight (147 lbs.) world championship against the undefeated 34-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 Knockouts).

When asked about his opponent, Ortiz seemed dismissive of the veteran's undefeated record. According to Boxing Scene, he had this to say:

"

Mayweather has never impressed me, ever since I was a kid. There's been a lot of hype. He's fought the right fight at the right time. Go home and turn off the sound. He's nothing. Well, not nothing, but not as great as people think. I thought he lost to Castillo. I thought Oscar was beating him, one-sided, until he stopped using the jab. I don't know that it's really a tough fight."

While many may be quick to dismiss the young man, many can agree Mayweather's first victory over Jose Luis Castillo (62-11-1, 53 Knockouts) and his victory over Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 Knockouts) are two of his most controversial victories.

Castillo was winning on the scorecards of many press members, yet Mayweather won a rather dominant unanimous decision on the scorecards considering the closeness of the fight.

De La Hoya made Mayweather look a bit uncomfortable to some press members until he stopped using his left jab.

Ortiz also has a huge age deficit in his favor, the biggest Mayweather's ever been up against and the second longest absence from the ring in his professional career. His longest absence came after his first retirement.

After 21 months apart from the ring, Mayweather returned September 18 2009 to dominate Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 Knockouts).

Despite Marquez being smaller and older, many considered the feat impressive.

Now Mayweather is tasked with repeating the same feat after a 16-month absence from the ring against someone significantly younger, faster and stronger than Marquez.

Ortiz believes Mayweather is not up to the task. He'll have the chance to punctuate his pugilistic point live on HBO Pay-Per-View at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 17.
