UFC 134 Results: Anderson Silva Still Champ, so What Will Chael Sonnen Say Next?

Gregory ChaseJun 7, 2018

With UFC 134 over and the country of Brazil celebrating a night filled with their favorite athletes winning in dominating fashion, many look to the future developments. Many ask, who is next for Silva? Or does the winner of Sonnen v. Stann gain the title shot?

But many others wonder what will Chael Sonnen say next? Chael has been the number one fighter in the trash-talking department and is unmatched in his wit, his comedy, and sometime offensiveness. With his withdrawal from cornering Okami, many already were waiting to hear what Sonnen would say after the fight.

Anderson Silva once gain proved that he is the greatest MMA fighter in the world, and won a TKO in the second round against Yushin Okami. He broke Okami’s will early going into the second, and then picked his shots and ultimately silenced the “Thunder”. Once again showing a dominant performance, Silva did not fail in pleasing his home country.

But with such conviction in the words of Sonnen, how will “Uncle Chael” respond to Okami’s and Silva’s performances. Sonnen made it very clear that Yushin would beat Silva, and after training with the Japanese fighter, many fans believed Okami was given a piece of kryptonite from Chael’s supply.

When Sonnen lost to Silva, he spoke at the post-fight press conference and was humble and recognized Silva as the better fighter that night. He did not contest the decision, nor did he say anything negative about the Champion. However, shortly after, he went back to the media claiming he had given him the win and he was the true Champion.

But what will Chael say in regards to Okami? It may very well be another speech about how Okami lost on purpose, or somehow Silva cheated. Either way, it will be a fabricated story, but funny enough to make fans want to listen to him. Who knows?  With Sonnen’s gift of gab and creativity, he may play it as Okami lost on purpose to give Chael the opportunity to beat him for the Championship, not just in general. Maybe he’ll blame Okami’s performance on the Brazilian fans and fake threats or some other elaborate excuse.

But with Silva winning by TKO rather than another triangle or other submission, Sonnen does not have the ammunition of BJJ to use, nor the presence of Steven Seagal. Silva defeated the man who Chael said would win, and did so very definitively. So what can he say?

Sonnen had told Ariel Helwani in an interview he would be there in the corner of Okami, until sponsors and overall smart choices pulled him away. He was sitting back and waiting for Okami to pull of the biggest upset in Rio as well. Portraying a man of his word, Sonnen is starting to have his statements fall apart in truth.

The biggest factor is to understand that Silva, whether a fan or a critic, should be respected as a fighter, just as Sonnen and Okami. The issue that some fans have had is that, because Sonnen has been very comedic and outspoken, they have started to agree with his statements. To put it into thought, would Silva have so many haters, or Brazilians in general, and would Sonnen still be as relative, had he not spoken a word in the first place? His talk seemed to pull him through his legal issues and kept him in the minds of many until his return.

Inevitably Sonnen will make some comment and excuse for the fight, but everyone around the world saw at UFC Rio, that Anderson “The Spider” Silva truly is the Champion and is a phenomenal fighter.

**UPDATE: Chael has taken to Twitter to start his talk and simply said "We call Andy "champ" like we call developmentally disabled animals "champ." Good boy, Andy, good boy!"
