UFC 134 Results: Ranking the Top 10 Light Heavyweights in the UFC

Sean SmithJun 7, 2018

At UFC 134, former UFC light heavyweight champions Mauricio Rua and Forrest Griffin met in a rematch of a bout that took place in September 2007.

In their first meeting, Griffin submitted Rua in the third round to spoil the Brazilian's UFC debut. However, the rematch played out much differently.

A healthy Rua, despite coming off of one of the most embarrassing losses of his career, looked as good as ever in disposing of Griffin in a first-round knockout.

With the rematch now in the books, let's take a look at where these two contenders stand in the light heavyweight division.

10. Tito Ortiz

1 of 10

MMA Record: 16-9-1

Last Five: 1-4

Streak: L1

Tito Ortiz is coming off of a loss to Rashad Evans, but who would have thought that "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" would even be a candidate for this list two months ago?

At 36 years old, Ortiz will likely never be considered a serious contender again, but he still has the ability to compete with some of the best in the world.

9. Forrest Griffin

2 of 10

MMA Record: 18-7

Last Five: 2-3

Streak: L1

It has been a slow decent for former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, but his knockout loss to Mauricio Rua at UFC 134 may have showed that Griffin can no longer be taken seriously as a threat to reclaim the 205-pound title.

8. Thiago Silva

3 of 10

MMA Record: 14-2, 1 NC

Last Five: 3-2

Streak: L1

Thiago Silva is currently serving a one-year suspension for cheating on his pre-fight drug test for a UFC 125 fight with Brandon Vera. Silva admitted to using a banned substance in order to help him heal from a recurring back injury.

If Silva can ever stay healthy, he has the ability to become a legitimate contender. However, Silva has to earn the trust of the UFC again after having his fight with Vera overturned from a win to a no-contest.

7. Alexander Gustafsson

4 of 10

MMA Record: 12-1

Last Five: 4-1

Streak: W3

Since losing to the extremely promising Phil Davis in his second fight in the UFC, Alexander Gustafsson has finished all three of his opponents in the first two rounds.

The 24-year-old Gustafsson, who now trains with Davis, is extremely well-rounded and should be considered one of the top fighters in this new wave of light heavyweight talent that is beginning to replace the Forrest Griffins and Tito Ortizs of the division.

6. Phil Davis

5 of 10

MMA Record: 9-0

Last Five: 5-0

Streak: W9

Phil Davis wasn't overly impressive in his last victory over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, but he did enough to remain undefeated.

After an injury forced Davis out of a bout with Rashad Evans, the former NCAA wrestling champion is now expected to meet Lyoto Machida.

5. Lyoto Machida

6 of 10

MMA Record: 17-2

Last Five: 3-2

Streak: W1

After losing two consecutive fights to Mauricio Rua and Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida's career with the UFC was beginning to look cloudy.

However, a highlight reel knockout of Randy Couture has Machida back in contention for a title shot. The fight has not been confirmed yet, but Machida could meet rising star Phil Davis in his next appearance.

4. Quinton Jackson

7 of 10

MMA Record: 32-8

Last Five: 4-1

Streak: W2

After back-to-back wins over Lyoto Machida and Matt Hamill, Quinton Jackson looks to have a renewed focus toward reclaiming the UFC light heavyweight championship.

At UFC 135, Jackson will get his chance to do just that. In the process, Jackson could stop the unparalleled hype surrounding current champion Jon Jones.

3. Rashad Evans

8 of 10

MMA Record: 16-1-1

Last Five: 4-1

Streak: W3

After spending a year on the shelf due to injury and waiting for title shots that never came, Rashad EVans finally returned to the Octagon with a win over Tito Ortiz at UFC 133.

With the win over Ortiz, Evans is now in line for another title shot against the winner of a fight between rival Quinton Jackson and former teammate Jon Jones.

2. Mauricio Rua

9 of 10

MMA Record: 20-5

Last Five: 3-2

Streak: W1

After losing his title to Jon Jones, Mauricio Rua bounced back in a big way at UFC 134. With his first-round knockout of Forrest Griffin, Rua is right back in the mix for another shot at the belt.

Once again, Rua showed that he is one of the most unstoppable forces in the division when he is healthy and has the time to properly prepare for a fight.

1. Jon Jones

10 of 10

MMA Record: 13-1

Last Five: 4-1

Streak: W4

Jon Jones proved his hype was deserved by dethroning Mauricio Rua from the top of the light heavyweight division. Now it is time for Jones to create his legacy by defending the belt that he took from the Brazilian legend.

The next chapter of Jones' career begins with a title defense against Quinton Jackson at UFC 135 in September 2011.
