UFC 134 Results: What Exactly Was Yushin Okami Thinking Against Anderson Silva?
Seriously, I have to ask it, now in uncensored format: What the f**k was Yushin Okami thinking?
He was thought to have the tools to beat Anderson "The Spider" Silva, and he did press Silva against the cage when bum-rushing Silva proved unsuccessful.
A head kick might have turned heads in Rio, but overall Okami pinning Silva against the cage proved successful enough to give Okami the round.
Not a problem--it's not the first round the champ has lost since winning the belt.
The second round is where I got into the proverbial "WTF?" Mode, but not entirely because of Silva.
See, it all started when Silva first dropped Yushin, and I didn't include it when I live blogged it, but that's when I was asking the question:
"What in the hell is Yushin Okami thinking here?"
At first it just seemed like Silva wanted Okami up so he wouldn't have to deal with any upkicks, but Okami's not exactly known for highlight-reel knockouts.
Later in the fight, Silva dropped Okami again, but Okami stayed on the ground, let Silva pass his guard, and let Silva connect with the most technical, most deliberately-telegraphed ground and pound I think I've ever seen from the champ.
So again, I have to ask to Yushin Okami:
Seriously, dude, what were you thinking?
Was the plan to work an active guard game and frustrate Silva into leaping into an upkick?
Was Okami hoping Silva would just gently step into his guard?
Does Okami have some freakishly-elite Jiu-Jitsu that nobody knows about, or was he thinking about a TKO by punches from the bottom?
I can't, for the life of me, fathom why Okami would just open the door to invite Silva to ground and pound on him and not respond to it.
Some might say Okami's heart may have went out the door, but was it that his confidence got shook, or was he just a tad arrogant in expecting the ref to stand them up due to what appeared to be a mapped-out bombardment path for Silva's punches from the top?
I could rack my brain all night questioning what Okami was thinking, but then again, I openly said I wasn't picking him.
Am I, the most openly-biased Anderson Silva fan on B/R, glad Silva is now 9-0 in title defenses?
You bet your a** I am, and I like that Silva responded to the situation Okami was trapped in, especially since it seemed Okami was not willing enough to respond to it in an attempt to avoid getting finished.
Yes, I'm glad and I want to ask, "Who will Silva get next?", but my Silva-love aside, I still have to ask once more:
Yushin "Thunder" Okami, just what exactly were you thinking, sir?
As for Uncle Chael, I'll accept his chocolate-wasted excuses for his boy's setback as we get closer to his chin's dinner date with Brian Stann's fists in Houston.
