The Top 5 Oregon Duck Fans
With the success of the Oregon Ducks football program over the past decade, there is one thing this world isn't lacking: Die-hard Oregon Ducks fans. While Nike does its part in making sure fans have the materials to express their love for their Ducks, we need to pause and tip our hats to the brash creativity that embodies a select group of Ducks fans.
They seem to stick out when you're at Autzen Stadium—home of the Ducks. ESPN seems to love them, as their cameras search for the most flamboyant in the crowd. You may know them very well.
We bring you the top 5 Oregon Duck fans.
No. 5: The Coconut Bra Guy
1 of 5His name is Ben Hollander, and he is a senior at the University of Oregon, but to his brothers and sisters in Duck Nation, he is simply known as "The Coconut Bra Guy."
He struts his stuff around Ducks games and is often found by the television cameras, hoping to spot fans with an extra sense of passion and tradition.
While we're not sure what he has on under that towel, we know what color the blood is in his veins: Thunder green and lightning yellow.
No. 4: The Duc-Nut
2 of 5He may not spell the team mascot correctly ("Duc" instead of "Duck"), but his correct loyalty has never been in question.
A regular at Ducks games, he wears a homemade camouflaged green, yellow and black shirt and adorns his head with a hard hat that displays his love.
Before you question his devotion to his team, remember that a face-painting fan is in a class of their own. (See: Seinfeld.)
No. 3: The Bird Man
3 of 5Don't ruffle his feathers while he struts his stuff. This die-hard Oregon Ducks fan figures, if his favorite team is called the "Ducks," he might as well dress like one too.
To slightly edge out The Duc-Nut (coming in at No. 3,) every Saturday The Bird Man replaces his shirt with a covering of yellow pom-poms too.
If that were not enough, he adorns his head with a yellow foam french fry, like a crown. While you may not be king of this list, you should feel honored to be No. 3, Bird Man.
No. 2: The Banana Fans
4 of 5The Autzen crowd is often referred to as a jungle, but these two fans have literally gone bananas.
Though Ducks fans won't like to admit it, it often does rain at Autzen stadium. During those games, the Banana Fans are set. They have full-body protection from the elements.
Before you start thinking their outfits are just rain gear, these committed fans do have to endure a few games in the blazing sun during the early season in September and October.
No. 1: Tie
5 of 5The top spot is a tie between Phil Knight and the band Supwitchugirl.
I can make a case for both of them.
As the co-founder of Nike and an Oregon alumni, Phil Knight single-handedly built Matthew Knight Arena, renovated Autzen Stadium and is now building a new football operations building for the Ducks. He has, in a way, made the University of Oregon what it is today.
Supwitchugirl, on the other hand, has literally written a song entitled "I Love My Ducks" (see video) and received nearly 1.5 million views on YouTube. They have started a t-shirt sensation with their "I Love My Ducks" slogan.
So, do we go for money or music?
If Jamie Slade, Michael Bishop and Brian McAndrew had $12.7 billion, would they give some of that to the University of Oregon? If Phil Knight could rap and make videos, would he write about his unabashed love for his Ducks?
If one of these hypothetical scenarios ever becomes a reality, our waiting and wondering will be over. For now, it's a tie.
