"Sigh"—It's the Consistency Thing Again Isn't it Arsenal?

Callum D'SouzaNov 15, 2008

Yes it is.

Having just come off a superb performance against Manchester United you would have thought Arsenal were back on track to be a real threat in the title race, but once again they failed to keep consistency and a poor performance against Aston Villa means that their title hopes are in shreds.

It was a poor performance, with Arsenal failing to put two to three passes together, the only real standout players were Denilson and Abou Diaby who were threatening at times but Arsenal lacked skill, strength, and the basics of soccer.

Their passing was atrocious at times and their defending was poor and unreliable. On many occasions Aston Villa cut open the back four and had clear shots on goal. The likes of Mikael Silvestre and William Gallas were poor at times and costly mistakes from both of them lead to goals.

Once again Nicklas Bendtner was poor upfront by himself, he was clumsy and lost out to Martin Laursen on many occasions. I felt we would have had a better chance with William Gallas upfront then Bendtner.

It was only when Emmanuel Adebayor and Carlos Vela were brought on that they finally Arsenal looked slightly better in attack.

I also feel Wenger's time is running out and that he needs to change something. He played the wrong team and formation, the 4-5-1 was not suited to Villa and it would have been better to have gone with a 4-4-2 with Carlos Vela and Nicklas Bendtner upfront.

I feel now that we should maybe think about dropping a few first team players and starting some of our fantastic youngsters.

Arsenal need to work out how to keep consistency or we will surely see Arsenal knocked out of the top four. The Manchester United win now means quite little and with some tough games ahead, without consistency Arsenal will surely see themselves slowly dropping down the table.

The defence also needs to be worked out and the captaincy, Arsenal need reliable center backs who can do the job. Wenger seems reluctant to use Johan Djourou who I believe is a solid prospect.

Arsenal also need to give the captaincy to someone like Cesc Fabregas or Manuel Almunia, as the likes of Toure and Gallas are unreliable and down in form.

To add salt to Arsenal wounds, Bacary Sagna is expected to be out for at least two weeks and with Emmanuel Eboue still injured the right side will be quite feeble.

A poor game played by Arsenal but to be fair to Martin O'Neill's men they played superbly and made Arsenal look like a second rate team.
