Michael Vick, Rex Grossman and 5 Headlines from Thursday's Preseason Games

Jordan CalfeeJun 7, 2018

For those of you who couldn't tear your eyes away from the newest "Jersey Shore," here are the headlines from tonight's three preseason NFL games (or as close to headlines as you can get with the preseason).

Between Michael Vick, Cam Newton and the Washington Redskins quarterback competition, the games at least provided some good television.

Without further ado, here are the five top stories from tonight's games.

Michael Vick Looking Pretty Sharp Again

1 of 5

Michael Vick wasn't perfect Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns, but he bounced back nicely from his horrendous performance last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Philadelphia Eagles' prized quarterback was 10-of-18 for 98 yards. Vick also rushed for 24 yards on four carries, the longest of which was a nine-yard touchdown scamper in which Vick showcased his signature move of easily beating someone who looked like they had an angle.

The Eagles' starters likely won't see much time in next week's preseason finale against the New York Jets, so this game should provide some nice momentum for Vick heading into the regular season.

His play could have been better (and he fumbled), but Vick did well considering he still didn't have Jeremy Maclin and he had almost no protection all night long.

Cam Newton's Passing Still Needs Some Polish

2 of 5

Fans were likely excited by his 49 rushing yards on just four carries, but Cam Newton was just 6-of-19 passing for only 75 yards for the Carolina Panthers Thursday night against the Cincinnati Bengals.

While he faced serious pressure all night, Newton's passing was still erratic.

At the same time, the Panthers' next best option is Jimmy Clausen, and if anything, the poor blocking is another reason the Panthers should start Newton. Odds are he still has the job locked up.

Andy Dalton Finally Had a Good Game

3 of 5

Andy Dalton struggled through his first two preseason games for the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing for no touchdowns and three interceptions.

As the projected starter, he needed something positive to work off, and he finally got that tonight night against the hapless Carolina Panthers.

The former TCU Horned Frogs star was 11-of-17 for 130 yards. His most impressive play came on a 40-yard touchdown pass to first-round pick A.J. Green. Hopefully a solid outing tonight will jump-start a good rookie season for Andy Dalton.

Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel and the Eagles Corners Look Great

4 of 5

One of the biggest stories of the offseason was the Philadelphia Eagles signing of two Pro Bowl cornerbacks to help Asante Samuel, who was lonely as the only Pro Bowl caliber cornerback on the Eagles team.

Tonight, the three-headed monster showed its teeth. Asante Samuel had an interception, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie blocked a field goal and Nnamdi Asomugha played displayed his usual stifling coverage.

The Philadelphia Eagles will certainly have plenty of depth and talent in the secondary this season.

Rex Grossman Isn't Going Down Without a Fight

5 of 5

The quarterback job for the Washington Redskins may already belong to John Beck, but Rex Grossman isn't going down without a fight.

For this Thurday's game against the Baltimore Ravens, Redskins' coach Mike Shanahan employed a method of two series and then switch for his two competing quarterbacks.

Benefiting from more snaps, Grossman had a solid game. The former Florida Gator was 8-of-15 for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, John Beck suffered from limited snaps and questionable play-calling early on, but bounced back late in the third quarter with a long drive and touchdown pass to Terrence Austin.

Grossman's performance will perhaps make the Shanahans' decision a little harder.
