Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston Fly over a New WWE Tag Team Division?
So, what do you do with two young, high-flying cruiserweights that have feuded with nearly everyone they can work and that you have no intention of putting your World Title on?
Put them together in a tag team.
WWE did just that this past Monday on RAW when Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston defeated Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga for the tag-team championships.

Now, any other time I might have a problem with this, mostly because two very good singles wrestlers were thrown together with nothing in common and were now supposed to be taken seriously as a tag team.
But, to be honest, when it comes to the idea of pairing Evan and Kofi together, I say why not? It’s really not as if they have anything else to do, and at least this way they will hopefully not have to job quite as often. And, to be honest, what is left for them as singles performers?
Alex Riley seems to be on his way to perhaps winning the United States Championship from Dolph Ziggler, and the WWE Title, well, that thing is going to buried with John Cena when he passes on.
So, much to the surprise of many fans, myself included, WWE has actually decided to give something to two younger talents who will probably never come within a country mile of the company’s top heavyweight championships.
Color me stunned.
Blatant sarcasm aside, I have to say I am happy for these guys. Evan and Kofi are very good in the ring, they could not be more over with the fans and they have each continuously proven that they are willing to do everything asked of them in the ring.
They are two young professionals who appreciate and respect the business, and earn their way, instead of excepting everyone else to make them feel like they’re special.
Pay attention, Young Bucks, you might learn something.
Now that I have put Kofi and Evan over, I suppose it’s time for me to predict the return of true tag-team wrestling in WWE.
After all, Kofi and Evan (who reportedly will be dubbed “Altitude Era,” and man, that’s catchy), were not the only alliance to be formed on RAW.
R-Truth and The Miz have now apparently embarked on their own little bromance, as each guy came to the sudden realization that "hey, I can’t win the belt again, you will probably never win it, let’s team up and blame everyone else!"
But, I must say that once again the idea of these two together seems ideal, and if given the right amount of time, and push, they may actually do something of value on the program.
Then, there are the Usos, who came in with some spotlight, then quickly died out. Now, they seem to have a renewed push and, again, I am glad to see it. I was back and forth on them at first, especially considering that the company had seemingly given up on them.
But, when they first hit the ramp with their ceremonial Samoan dance before a match, I sat in shock. I thought, “holy cow, they’re getting something.”
Yes, I continue to be amazed.
Add to this the rumors of other tag teams reportedly being looked at to join the company and, yes, it does appear that WWE is getting back to some honest to God real tag-team wrestling.
But, as I try to contain my enthusiasm, I must remind everyone that this is Vince McMahon we’re talking about here, a guy who seems not to be very high on tag teams in wrestling.
I know what you’re thinking. No one likes a buzz kill, Tom.
Trust me, I am only trying to be realistic with my expectations on this one. While I don’t expect a tag-team renaissance like we saw with The Dudleys, Edge and Christian and The Hardy Boyz, I am really holding out hope that what we’re seeing right now is going to amount to something.
I am a tag-team guy, through and through, and I just want a taste of it again because I miss it.
The Rock 'n Roll Express, The Horsemen, The Midnight Express, The Fantastics, The British Bulldogs, The Road Warriors—so many great tag teams, so many great memories. Tag-team wrestling used to be big business in the industry, a proven moneymaker.
Oh yeah, and fans loved it. Forgot about that one.
So, for once, I am going to attempt to set aside my negativity and focus on the possibilities of what could very well turn out to be a tag-team revival of epic proportions from the biggest pro wrestling company in the world.
I think. At least, I hope so. Well, we’ll see.
