WWE: 8 Storylines That Need to Be Addressed at Night of Champions
We are just under three-and-a-half weeks from the one pay-per-view intended to guarantee title matches: Night of Champions. If you are a champion, congratulations, because you will have a match on the card. As for the rest of the roster, you better hope that you have a chance to win a championship on that night. There are rare exceptions, like CM Punk and Big Show last year, but this is mostly all about the gold.
Not every major storyline in WWE today is centered around the belts, though. From conspiracy theories to text messages and women wanting to be "pin up strong," WWE's current batch of storylines could make for a very entertaining Night of Champions. If they all make it onto the show is anyone's guess, but here are eight aspects of the current WWE landscape that should be seen on pay-per-view in 24 days at Night of Champions.
Who Sent Kevin Nash That Text?
1 of 8It is the storyline that has had the WWE Universe buzzing since the end of SummerSlam. Who told Kevin Nash to attack CM Punk, leading to the incapacitated undisputed WWE Champion to lose his championship to Mr. Money in the Bank, Alberto Del Rio? The fingers have been pointed in various directions.
Initial thoughts went to Triple H, who is friends with Nash and invited Nash to come to SummerSlam. It was supposedly the Game's phone that sent a text message to Nash about the plan, but the COO of WWE does not remember doing that. Others suspect that Stephanie McMahon, HHH's wife, got her hands on her husband's phone and sent the message to get back at the winner between CM Punk and John Cena for getting her father fired.
Signs point to John Laurinaitis personally. The Executive Vice President for Talent Relations for WWE wanted to throw his weight around and avenge the loss of his long-time friend, Vince McMahon. By using HHH's own hardware to plant the seed in Nash's brain, Del Rio got to cash in Money in the Bank, much like Vince McMahon wanted to see happen at Money in the Bank in Chicago.
Vickie Guerrero and Managing Dolph Ziggler/Jack Swagger
2 of 8Vickie Guerrero is now at the top of her game as a wrestling manager. Jack Swagger has noticed. At Night of Champions, Ziggler is already in a United States Championship match, but doesn't know his opponent. Would WWE dare to nip this conflict in the butt by having Swagger as Ziggler's opponent and forcing Vickie Guerrero to choose a person to support at ringside?
It could potentially be very entertaining. Somehow, I am dreading the idea of including Alex Riley into this match, making it a triple threat and seeing him steal a win and a championship in the process. Then again, Riley could be the one to get pinned and continue the rivalry between the two suitors of Vickie's services.
Divas of Doom vs. Kelly Kelly
3 of 8These two beautiful women, Beth Phoenix and Natalya, have teamed together to try and eradicate the stereotypical Diva in WWE. The prime example of that which they hate is current Divas Champion Kelly Kelly. Calling themselves the Divas of Doom, Phoenix and Natalya hope to take the championship away and be a shining example of strong and beautiful women, using the term "pin up strong" often.
It isn't clear which of the two women will face Kelly Kelly at Night of Champions, but it is almost certain to be one or the other, if not both. Kelly Kelly got a quick roll-up victory over Phoenix to upset the Glamazon at SummerSlam, but can the current Divas Champion be so lucky twice?
Kevin Nash's Involvement in CM Punk's Life
4 of 8Branching off from Kevin Nash's involvement at the end of SummerSlam and the text message that told him to attack Punk, Nash and Punk have had a war of words for the past two weeks. It has led to Nash putting his hands on Punk, and many believe that Nash will face Punk at Night of Champions.
Nash screwed Punk out of his WWE Championship and a chance to gain it back, both of which happened in a span of eight days. With Punk not having much to do for the event, don't be shocked if Nash laces up the boots and takes on the former WWE Champion at Night of Champions, with bragging rights on the line.
The Miz, R-Truth and Conspiracies
5 of 8I don't exactly know how to include these two in Night of Champions, but it needs to be done. R-Truth and the Miz aligned with each other officially on Monday night, claiming conspiracies on both of them. I don't know if it would be a conspiracy, but it would certainly be a shame to not see these two in a match at Night of Champions.
Will they wrestle for tag team gold? Maybe. Let's hold that thought for a little bit.
World's (Strongest) Heavyweight Champion?
6 of 8The basic question you need to ask yourself is the following: Do you think that Randy Orton would drop the World Heavyweight Championship after just five weeks and give it to Mark Henry of all people? We will accept "probably not" and any other harsh answer you may have.
Orton has continued his "me against the rest of the Smackdown roster" crusade, moving away from Christian finally. The World's Strongest Man certainly has done enough to merit this match, but I have my doubts in his chances in this match. Henry may be one of the most deserving men for a world title reign, but Orton is untouchable most of the time, and Henry has all the makings of a monster heel that is a stop gap before the next major feud.
Remember Tag Team Wrestling?
7 of 8You may not remember it, but Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne are here to try and help you. The new tag team champions are looking for Night of Champions opponents just like they are looking for a name for their team. My personal submission: Bourne to Boom. Feel free to use that, but make sure to attach my name to it.
It could be the Miz and R-Truth, but it could be another tag team. What about featuring the Great Khali and Jinder Mahal? It would give Mahal his big stage to prove himself staying on the roster, improve sales in India and have a nice size complex with Bourne hitting Air Bourne on the giant. Also, even though they aren't heels, the Usos have done all they really can to try and merit a tag team title run.
Ultimately, it could be the time for Otunga and McGillicutty's rematch. If they lose, they could potentially split on a pay-per-view and make it a big deal, even if nobody really cares.
Del Rio's Destiny Done?
8 of 8I'm getting afraid with this match. I'm afraid that Alberto Del Rio is being whittled down to a weak champion. I'm afraid that Del Rio will be marked a paper champion with a loss at this event. I'm even fearful that there may be something wrong with John Cena and they are pumping his accomplishments up. This would be an explanation for Cena's two WWE Championship reigns since May 1 and his potential at a third. Cena is an 11-time champion and still just 34, so something doesn't really add up.
They will probably find ways to keep Cena in the title hunt leading up to Survivor Series, when the Rock will be in attendance and spice up their upcoming WrestleMania match. Survivor Series is still three months away, so world title reign No. 12 could be on its way. It wouldn't do any favors for Del Rio, but the key is to satisfy Cena.
It becomes harder to believe it because Punk lost the title by tapping out, but WWE will refuse to have Cena submit. Cena will probably have to win by DQ because Cena getting pinned is way too much to give to Del Rio in many people's eyes. Personally speaking, I feel like they should have Cena sitting out some weeks and resting some sore muscles because it will only hurt in the long run if Cena isn't 100 percent by WrestleMania time.
Be sure to follow me on Twitter, where we can talk about WWE and think up awesome names for Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne as a tag team.
