US Open Tennis 2011 Results: Daily Updates and Analysis
The 2011 US Open will run from August 29th until the men's singles final is completed on September 11th.
Novak Djokovic has been seeded No. 1 right now on the men's side, but there are some concerns about a shoulder injury that he suffered at the Western and Southern Open. Djokovic was forced to withdraw in the final against Andy Murray, just his second defeat of the season.
After the match, Djokovic spoke with ESPN, and had the following to say about his shoulder,
"The reason is shoulder pain. I just could not serve. I served an average 90 miles per hour the first serve, and I could not play forehands [stretched out wide].
"
That doesn't bode well for the Wimbledon Champion looking to win his third major of the year. He needs to heal in a hurry or he could find himself as an easy upset target in the early rounds of the US Open.
However, Djokovic is not the only player on the men's side featuring injury concerns. A number of other top players have been forced to either withdraw or retire from matches in the past few weeks. That list includes: David Ferrer, Andy Roddick, Robin Soderling, Mardy Fish, Jurgen Melzer, Milos Raonic, and Michael Llodra.
On the women's side, Kim Clijsters has withdrawn due to an abdominal strain. Both the Williams sisters have had some injury problems as well.
Venus has had a viral illness, while Serena has had some toe issues.
With all the injuries going around, this could be one of the most wide open tournaments the US Open has ever seen.
Higher Seeds Fall Early on Monday at Flushing Meadows
1 of 8Serena Williams knocked off No. 16 seed Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round of the US Open, in what was considered an upset based on the numbers, but came as no surprise to anyone.
Williams is one of the favorites to win this tournament despite her seed, and she is living up to expectations thus far.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also upset Francesca Schiavone to advance to the quarterfinals.
Janko Tipsarevic advanceed through to the quarterfinals for the first time in his career with a victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish are two of the big name players in action later in the day. Both players will be looking to lock their quarterfinal spots up with a victory over a top 20 player.
Top Men, Women Continue to Roll on Wednesday, Early Thursday
2 of 8Riger Federer cruised to a straight set victory in his second round match, as did Tomas Berdych on the fourth day of the US Open.
Berdych was extremely impressive in his victory over Fabio Fognini, as he took the final two sets 6-0.
Verz Zvonareva, Maria Sharapova, and Andy Murray all cruised to victory on Wednesday, with all three players winning in straight sets.
Andy Roddick pulled out a four-set victory in his opening match, while fellow American John Isner also needed four sets to win his first match of the tournament.
The big upset of the day came when the top seeded Bryan Brothers were ousted from the doubles tournament in the first round for the first time in ten years.
Top Men Dominate While Women Error on Opening Monday and Early Tuesday
3 of 8Roger Federer highlighted the first day of action at the US Open. And he looked as dominant as ever as he cruised to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over his over matched and unranked opponent. And that match was typical of early play on the men's side.
There have not been any upsets, and most victories came via straight sets. The lone seeded American male, Mardy Fish, looked fantastic. He cruised in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. The match for Fish was little more than a warmup.
Things were more interesting on the women's side. The early action on the women's side has been marred by sloppy play. Defending Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova committed 52 unforced errors, and she was upset in straight sets.
Maria Sharapova, her opponent in the Wimbledon finals, had a similar match with different results. Sharapova committed 56 unforced errors but escaped with a three set victory.
All Systems Go at US Open
4 of 8The eye of Hurrican Irene did not focus on the US Open, and as a result, this tournament will go on as scheduled. And that schedule begins on Monday.
While there isn't likely to be any big upsets on the first day of action, there should still be plenty of entertaining tennis.
Roger Federer will headline Monday's action. Federer's last tournament saw him make an uncharacteristically early exit in the quarterfinals. In that match, Federer's famous ground stroke lost its precision. It will be interesting to see if he has since regained it.
Here are some of the matches to watch on Monday:
No. 3 Roger Federer vs. Santiago Giraldo
Tobias Kamke vs. No. 8 Mardy Fish
Heather Watson vs. No. 3 Maria Sharapova
Stephanie Foretz Gacon vs. No. 2 Vera Zvonareva
Urszula Radwanska vs. No. 12 Agnieszka Radwanska
Arthur Ashe Kids Day Canceled
5 of 8Arthur Ashe kids day was canceled at the US Open due to the affects of Hurricane Irene. Safety is of the utmost importance and the crew needs to ensure that the venue is in the best possible shape for tournament play.
The unpredictable nature of a natural disaster has already affected the pre-tournament events. Hopefully it doesn't overstay its welcome.
Complete Women's Draw
6 of 8The 2011 Women's Draw has been set and both the Williams sisters find themselves in a tough spot. Venus Williams is not seeded for the event and is set to meet Sabine Lisicki in the second round, while Serena is seeded No. 28.
Caroline Wozniacki is the No. 1 seed for the event, despite the fact that she has yet to win a grand slam. Two-time defending champion Kim Clijsters has been forced to withdraw due to an abdominal strain, thus opening up the field for another player to succeed.
