Kansas City Chiefs: 3 Veterans Who Have Been Disappointments This Preseason
These preseason games don’t count. Fans will always keep that in mind while they watch these exhibition games.
However, these games mean a lot to the players fighting for a spot on the roster.
It’s hard to select players to put on this list since Todd Haley did not allow most of them to play in Week 1. But there are some backups on the team who have been in the league for a little bit and have not stepped up this preseason.
Here are three players who have not performed well and need to step up.
WR Steve Breaston
1 of 3This isn’t anything to be concerned about. However, it would have been nice if the Chiefs could show us what Steve Breaston is capable of doing this preseason.
Perhaps Haley wants to keep him under the radar.
Breaston only has one catch this preseason for five yards and has obviously been a non-factor for the Chiefs so far. But that is not to say that Breaston will struggle this season due to his inactivity.
With Jonathan Baldwin out for six-to-eight weeks, Breaston may receive a lot of playing time this Friday night against St. Louis. Baldwin’s injury opened up the door for Verran Tucker last Friday against Baltimore.
Perhaps Breaston will try and make the best of this opportunity and work with Matt Cassel against the Rams.
S Sabby Piscitelli
2 of 3Sabby Piscitelli doesn’t look like he’s be a reliable option if the Chiefs need a safety to step up.
Piscitelli allowed a couple of first-down completions and was penalized for a personal-foul call against Baltimore last week.
Other than that, Piscitelli has had a quiet preseason for the wrong reasons. Jon McGraw has managed to do well when filling in for the starting safeties and the Chiefs should stick with him as a backup safety.
It’s very likely that Piscitelli is on the chopping block.
CB Quinten Lawrence
3 of 3The switch from wide receiver to cornerback has not been a great transaction for Quinten Lawrence.
Lawrence was hoping that finding a new position would open new doors for him. Despite the lack of success as a defensive player, Lawrence is the team’s top returner as he has handled a majority of the returns on kickoffs and punts.
If Lawrence can come away with a big return on special teams, he may survive and make the 53-man roster.
As far as his cornerback position goes, his inexperience is a setback, and it’s doubtful that he can make the team as a defensive back.
